What happens to a dream deferred?
Welp. Two weeks ago, #1 in the nation, Heisman front runner, with a conference championship all but wrapped up for an early Christmas present. Now, we’re #7 in the nation, with a QB who might get an invite, and fighting for a co-championship. And now it’s Texas…
Texas is #1 in the conference in TFL (which has kind of proven to be kryptonite for our offense over the past few games). They are also 3rd in sacks in the league (again, these things have tended to get us behind schedule offensively). Texas is 39th in pass efficiency D (about 41 spots ahead of our D), 11th in Pass efficiency offense ( 7 spots ahead of ours). UT’s scoring D, which is only 65th, however that didn’t stop the 116th ranked team from slowing our offense down. UT’s scoring offense which is only 7th in the Big 12 is still 22nd nationally.
10-2 wouldn’t be that bad, right? I mean, still a “good” year. We were expected to finish 6th; finishing 2nd isn’t awful. Was 2002 awful? It’ll be senior day. 3 guys, Klein, Harper, Brown…will the team be emotionally ready? Last time in BSFS, a hug and a private comment in their ears from Bill, running out to cheers, hugging parents… Will it be too much for them and the team to focus?
The season has been kind of long, hasn’t? So much pressure, just building and building, and the team has looked tired, hurt, beat up the last few weeks by not only the teams but the weight of all that pressure. And while the pressure of a glass football doesn’t exist, there’s still some for a crystal bowl. And now, you not only lose a conference championship, but also a BCS bowl.....
...I just……that can’t be how it ends, right? I mean, they’re going to win, right? 11-1, conference champions, a trip to the ceremonies, a BCS bowl game….those are meaningful dreams in any season. Do you really think Arthur’s not going to make that tackle? That Harper isn’t going to make that catch on 3rd down that we need? You honestly think that Collin isn’t going to get that yard? You think that Mack Brown is just going to walk into our stadium, beat LHC Bill Snyder, and come out with the horns up? Hell no.
EMAW up. Horns down. And there’s just nothing Texas can do about it.
