From what I'm reading, it might also have to do with his biographer trying (possibly succeeding?) to access his emails.  Says he's being investigated by the FBI in the matter, which is definitely unusual since the CIA usually takes care of investigations internally.  CIA people might have called the Bureau to get ride of what they might have considered a pain in the ass, since was an agency "outsider" before being selected to lead it.

I'm enjoying the analysis from media/pundits (mostly women) talking about how could he do this and what was he thinking? It's pretty obvious if you see his wife and the other women. Is he just abusing his power? Turns out Broadwell is more than just a little bit crazy, which isn't surprising if you've seen her speak. 

Not sure if the FBI ever really had a warrant to do some of this investigation, though.

Looks like both guys were caught up in a classic honey pot operation.   MILF like ladies that have (almost) the perfect air of plausible deniability . . . married with kids to successful men. 

The only question is who was running it and why.

Petraeus was very outspoken about 18-24 months ago against Israel.  Discussing the perception of Israeli favoritism from the U.S. and how that impacts U.S. relations in the Middle East, and how Israeli actions in regards to Gaza et. al.  Impacted U.S. military operations and relations in other countries in the region.   

Just a few days after Petraeus is out, Israel is pumping smart bombs into Hamas Leadership and massing troops on the borders of Gaza. 

Plus, there's lots of chatter about how Petraeus wasn't liked at the CIA.

The father of Paula Broadwell says it goes much deeper (pun only slightly intended).   I first thought the same thing you did SD, but as more pieces to this puzzle get added, it just seems like there's a lot more there than a couple of MILF's running around boinking generals.

That's an interesting take:

I visited MacDill for a story a few years ago and it certainly seemed like a hotbed of tight security. But one wonders how a civilian  doctor and his attractive, dark-haired wife, now badly in debt, move to the area and, with no direct military connection themselves, start making great friends of such high ranking officers as Petraeus and Marine Corps. Gen. John Allen.

Maybe it’s my latent paranoia from working for six years in Moscow, but if I were in the KGB, FSB or whatever it is today and I wanted to penetrate top brass in the U.S., one idea would be to plant socialite newbies in smaller base towns like Tampa, set them up as local civilian social lions with plenty of champagne and caviar and then wait for the 20,000 to 30,000 personal emails to come in from four-star generals. (The generals’ total cluelessness in email security is another topic).

I doubt that many secrets were being revealed (seems like weird pillowtalk but whatever) but the main reasoning for firing a general over this is they would be more susceptible to being blackmailed.

they probably have long email threads where all the previous emails are included in otherwise short emails. I can see that happening pretty easily like that.
