Silver Lining(there is hope!)
« on: October 23, 2012, 10:15:46 PM »
So I just realized something of a silver-lining with the oscar Weber hire.  After Illinois canned oscar and hired Ohio head coach John Groce, the Ohio Bobcats apparently expressed interest(source) in hiring the one and only oscar Weber.  oscar wanted to hold out for the big times, so he must've said no thanks to the coach-swap.  why is this good news, you ask?

Well, the AD of Ohio University, Jim Schaus, just so happens to be a very good AD with a history of great head basketball coach hires.  You might remember Schaus from his Wichita State tenure.  While he was there he hired Mark Turgeon who led the Shockers to the Sweet 16.  After Turgeon jumped ship, Schaus hired Greg Marshall who returned the Shockers to national relevance, earning a #14 rank in the coaches poll and a 5 seed in the NCAA tournament.  One of the first actions of Schaus at Ohio was to hire John Groce, who led the Bobcats to two NCAA appearances and all the way to the Sweet 16 this past season before taking the Illinois job.

Yes, Kansas State should not settle for the ambitions of a school like Ohio, but if a man as qualified as Jim Shaus was really interested in putting B-Web in the head coaching position, then that would be enough for me.  It would, at the very least, mean that Weber is not a bad basketball coach!  It would mean that Weber will recruit good players and likely have successful NCAA tournament appearances. So cheer up, there is some hope!  This may be a reach...in my brief research I didn't find a whole lot more about Ohio being interested in Weber...but I would rather be excited than depressed, so I'll take it for the slight boost in confidence that it is.

bonus
An interesting note for you history buffs.  Jim Shaus' father was Fred Shaus, head coach and general manager of the Los Angeles Lakers.  Fred led the Lakers to 4 Western Conference Championships and while he was GM assembled the crew that won the NBA title in 1972, this team featured Wilt Chamberlain and famous Coal Farmer Jerry West.  It would seem that these Shaus guys know basketball.

Man, has to hurt to have your AD leave you for Ohio.  I guess they at least play football there.

what if schous only faked interest to lure currie into his web of intrigue?

Oh, I'm sure it was.  But, if I was a WSU fan, that would still hurt.  Makes sense, it's a good career move but it would still suck as a fan.  I guess those guys just kinda have to get used to being a stepping stool for bigger jobs.

Wtf is this crap

"Coaches I didn't even know were contacting me. Former players, guys that are playing in Europe … so many people reached out and said, 'Thank you. You did things right. You affected me.'

Weber said things began to snowball once his players received word that he would likely be fired.

"[Otherwise] we would've made the NCAA tournament," Weber said.

He was a crap hire and a terrible coach, WAY OVER RATED fell bad for Illinois. Not their fault, Illinois is not a good job has really high expectatoins and doesn't the greatest of resources because everybody and the mother recruits chi town.

All I'm getting out of this thread is that we have the first AD on the replacement list for when we fire Currie.
