Seemed like a slow day here, so I thought I'd give us something to talk about. Here's the best basketball coaches we've had in the past 25 years. These are facts:
1.
Bob Huggins. Highest overall winning percentage of anyone on this list. Won 700 games for a reason and is a Hall of Fame lock. Absolutely turned around KSU in one year. Brought in the highest-profile recruit in KSU history, plus the school’s all-time scorer. Brought us: Michael Beasley, Jacob Pullen, Bill Walker, Jamar Samuels, Dom Sutton.
2.
oscar Weber. Only guy on the list to coach a team to the NCAA national championship game, or to be named national coach of the year. Combined overall winning record against the other coaches on this list, including wins over Huggins and Kruger teams in the NCAA tournament. Ranked to high? Maybe. We'll see. Brought us: (incomplete).
3.
Lon Kruger. Why are there so many ex-Illinois coaches in the Big 12? Kruger won at KSU, Florida, Illinois, UNLV. Three-time conference coach of the year. Went 4-for-4 with NCAA appearances at KSU, including Elite Eight run. Brought us the best NBA player of the era (Mitch Richmond). Clown-suited the guy below him on this list head-to-head. Brought us: Richmond, Steve Henson, Ski Jones, Jean Derouillere, Fat Fred McCoy.
4.
Frank Martin. Conference coach of the year at KSU. Four NCAA appearances in five years at KSU, including one Elite Eight run. Brought us: The entire current roster of awesomeness, Denis Clemente, Curtis Kelly.
5.
Dana Altman. Solid career. Conference coach of the year at KSU, plus three other times. As a young coach he murdered it on the recruiting trail, but there was an odd disconnect between that and his actual coaching style. Brought us: KSU’s first McDonald’s All-American. Can anyone name him?
