Bacon fights back...

COQUILLE, Ore. (AP) — Oregon authorities are investigating how a farmer was eaten by his hogs.

Terry Vance Garner, 69, never returned after he set out to feed his animals last Wednesday on his farm near the Oregon coast, the Coos County district attorney said Monday.

A family member found Garner's dentures and pieces of his body in the hog enclosure several hours later, but most of his remains had been consumed, District Attorney Paul Frasier said. Several of the hogs weighed 700 pounds or more.

It's possible Garner had a medical emergency, such as a heart attack, or was knocked over by the animals, then killed and eaten, Frasier said, adding that at least one hog had previously bitten Garner.

The possibility of foul play is being investigated as well.

"For all we know, it was a horrific accident, but it's so doggone weird that we have to look at all possibilities," Frasier told The Register-Guard.

A pathologist was unable to identify a cause or manner of death, the newspaper reported. The remains will be examined by a forensic anthropologist at the University of Oregon.

Terry Garner was "a good-hearted guy" who cared for several huge adult sows and a boar named Teddy, said his brother, Michael Garner, 75, of Myrtle Point.

Piglets were typically sold to local 4-H kids.

"Those animals were his life," Michael Garner said. "He had all kinds of birds, and turkeys that ran all over the place. Everybody knew him."

Michael Garner said one of the large sows bit his brother last year when he accidentally stepped on a piglet.

"He said he was going to kill it, but when I asked him about it later, he said he had changed his mind," the brother said.

Domestic hogs are not typically known to be as aggressive as their feral cousins, but "there is some degree of danger associated with any animal," John Killefer, who heads the Animal and Rangeland Sciences Department at Oregon State University in Corvallis, told the newspaper.

While pigs "are more omnivorous than other farm animals, (such as) cows," Killefer called the case highly unusual.

Most hogs are raised until they reach a market weight of between 250 and 300 pounds, while breeding female pigs rarely weigh more than 400 pounds, Killefer said.

Pigs scare me to death. I would never turn my back on a group of them.

When you sell them, you get paid by the pound. This guy was a huge dumbass, though, and did not bother to calculate all of the extra feed that it cost him to get those sows to 700 pounds. He also forgot to calculate just how small he is to a 700 pound sow, and how delicious he must have looked. Game set match, Terry Vance Garner, 69.

At one time, it was not uncommon for farmers to throw dead cows or calves into the pen with the hogs. Not certain if anyone does that anymore.  :dunno:

These were proabably his breeding stock, they aren't kept to fatten up, but rather be little pig factories that will give birth (not the boar obvs) and then the progeny will get fed out and sold at about 225-275 lbs.

I completely call bullshit on the claim that domestic hogs are tame.  While working for a commercial swine operation in high school, I had many close encounters with evil sows.  After they give birth they are vicious and are much faster than a human in a open area, even if they weigh over 500 lbs.

Yeah, hogs will eat anything that won't put up too much of a fight. They will act like your best friend, but if you had a broken leg or something, they would eat you lickity split.

they will eat anything, including their own, if they die in the pen and you do not get them out quick enough.

Pigs will try eating just about anything to see if it's edible.  The guy probly had a medical condition and fell down and couldn't get back up.  Pigs started investigating the motionless body and tore a piece off.  Once they found out it was something they could eat it most likely turned into a free for all.

so hypothetically, if someone drops off a body in a pig pen, then they will dispose of the evidence?

Not the dentures in this case.  Not sure about real teeth.

The pigs murdered him and tried to cover it up so they could continue to receive his social security checks.

It's possible if you pull out all of the teeth and shave the head, but odds are some of the bones will get left.

I mean if you were to think about it like that, you would have to consider the pen and its' state (ie. muddy, shitty, size, etc).  so ya I suppose if they drug it around enough you would have a terrible time finding all the pieces.  bones are a different story.

Yes is the answer to your question.  For a more detailed explanation, I recommend you see the movie "Snatch", which is actually a very good movie.
