catheters
« on: September 25, 2012, 01:28:58 PM »
recently had one. and recently had one removed.

it was about 2 feet long and 1/4 in in diameter.

the nurse was irish (strong accent) and made it much more cute when pulling it out.

"lets get ridda dis ting na, whatda say boyo"

worse experience of my life.

(ranks top 5 of ecn's greatest fears)

anyone else ever had to have one of these bad boys?

seems like it would be cool, kind of one of those "life stories" you get to tell friends at the bar over ice cold beers, you guys.  never gets old, what  a great thing.

reminds me of the game at ULL where they kept advertising catheters that could be delivered to your door

I worked with a guy that had a catheter that they cut too short then sent him home with it and a bottle of pills.  When he got home he was so uncomfortable that he started taking pills.  In the haze of taking pills he was still very uncomfortable, so he decided to keep taking more.  The next thing he knew he woke up in his living room with blood everywhere and the catheter was out.  He pulled it out with the bulb still inflated.  After hearing that story, I will do whatever it takes not to get a catheter.

I've dated enough nurses to know this happens on a semi regular basis.

This is semi-common?  I'm never getting a catheter.

Its only common in people who are all mumped up on drugs/alcohol/pain meds while at the hospital.

Usually the story goes like this

Person enters all mumped up, they try to sedate them but their tolerance is so high due to their addiction to X that the sedation drugs dont work. Nurses leave to go ask the doctor what to do and come back and the person has ripped the catheter out and is bleeding all over the place.

Have heard variations of this story from 2 different nurses

Canadian guy I know was checked for a STD once and had a giant queue-tip navigated in there.  He hated it so much.  Results were negative.  Bladder infection.

I was once given the 'option' to have a catheter put in. Dr. said I would be peeing every half hour for a week during the treatment and it would be more 'convenient for me.' I saw him for what he was and told him he could keep his damned catheter.

Yes, then they slide it down into your bladder and inflate a balloon to hold it in place.

true. they 'feed' it thru the hole all the way to the bladder.

then the nurse comes with an empty syringe and drains it. and then comes the yanking.

modern era they are smaller in diameter but since my operation was done by a urologist, he wanted to go old school.

the nurse said, "what the....dis tube is never endin', tank god you were under when he gave you dis"

it was embarrassing when there were 5 people standing around to take it out.
