I end up feeling really good about the upcoming season when our preseason rankings look like this.  We become the media darling once again when exceed expectations.

Kansas State 24, Kansas 16: Everybody counts out the Jayhawks in David Beaty's introduction to the rivalry. The underdogs respond with three tough quarters but miss too many red zone opportunities. K-State extends its lead on an Alex Delton rushing TD early in the fourth quarter and sit on it the rest of the way. They're going to need one more W to go bowling.

i agree. plus it's a k-state rule for us to be shitty when everyone expects us to be good, so i'm perfectly fine with this year's projections.

Chatmon: This question will be much easier to answer in a week or so, after we've seen the teams in action, but I'll take a shot at it.

1. TCU -- Gary Patterson has a proven track record of building elite defenses.

2. Baylor -- The Big 12's best defensive line will set the tone.

3. Oklahoma State -- Star power, speed and athleticism.

4. Oklahoma -- If a young secondary comes through, the Sooners can top the list.

5. West Virginia -- The most experienced defense in the conference needs some defensive linemen to be playmakers.

6. Texas -- A young unit that could end up in the top 3 a year from now.

7. Kansas State -- Always tough to beat and features some experience

Its Monday morning and I know I need a good dose of anger at a faceless entity to get me started.

1) Stud Coaches rank the cats just outside the top 25.  Know-nothing media desk jockeys put us at #31
 
2) Even though the blog is a joke since losing known smart guy and all-around EMAW David Ubben, the big 12 blog had us sliding down a spot to Texas rough ridin' Tech following a weekend in which the Kats dismantled an offense that hung 500+ yards on the road against a ranked opponent and saw Tech yield 17 points in the first half to crappy UTEP.

Here's another guy saying "losing Ertz is a setback." Is it? Honest question. I mean, I know the coaches considered Ertz to be the best, but with Huebner playing relatively well and having never seen Ertz take more than two snaps, I don't know what we've lost. Maybe we lost a lot. Is Huebner a setback?

On paper, I guess "losing your starter" is a setback.  But in the real world, is he really your starter if hes only ever played 3 snaps?  I guess implicitly we have a less competent quarterback under center than we could without injury, by Bill's estimation.  But, quantifying that let alone saying that it is large enough to constitute a setback is probably overstating it.

He had less experience than Hubes, both in game and in preparation. We'll never know what we lost, but we didn't lose proven production or leadership.

Putting K-State lower on the list because they lost their "starting QB" despite the fact our "backup" has played almost every snap is pretty much just a desperate attempt to cling to preseason expectations (which is also ironic since those expectations assumed Ertz would be starting). Pretty circular stuff.

I've seen several pieces talking about H-ertz being a setback, and I didn't know whether there was really something to that or if it was just lazy writing. I pretty much assume that these writers know more about football than I do, but also that they're generally lazy hacks, so not sure where to come down on this one.
