One thing to keep in mind is the non-3D includes an LED "edge" backlight , where the 3D one includes a "dynamic edge". What that means, I don't really know, but would explain drastic differences in picture quality with non 3D content.

But I don't think you'd go wrong with either TV.

FWIW, when you get the TV, let us know the model #, there are forums devoted to geeks fine tuning the picture and posting the exact settings you need to optimize picture quality
Where did you get that overnight bag?

Go to CNet and read about what each one does and doesn't do

display tvs are shitty.    they are out of the box settings, or worse, some dumbasses tweaking.     Plus the input is usually a satellite signal split amongst 53 tvs or a DVD player hooked up with RCA cables.

The best thing to do is research the eff out of tvs online, reading reviews, visiting AVSForums, and armed with that picking the set you feel best meets your criteria.   Once you buy it, use the calibration settings provided by AVSForum users to set it up to the "ideal" settings, and tweak that to your taste.     I personally like a little brighter picture than most "ideal" settings provide, to each their own.

Comparing 2 tvs in Best Buy based on picture quality is garbage.

give each television a gentle caress and choose the one that just feels right.

I don't think you can really compare televisions by display models. JMO.

I thought that too, but I went to 2 different Best Buys and they had absolutely equal discrepancies between models.
Pretty small sample size.

Also they tend to make certain models look shitty on purpose

:horrorsurprise:

it's true.  they'll make certain models that they're trying to sell look better than the others around it.
use online reviews to help you decide which tv is the best and just go from there.

Cheesy Mustache QB might make an appearance.

New warning: Don't get in a fight with someone who doesn't even need to bother to buy ink.

What if the internet wants him to buy another and not because of its merits?  What then pissclams?  I think he should just ask The Ed on a call-in.
My prescience is fully engorged.  It throbs with righteous accuracy.  I am sated.

True story, The Ed has like 9 big-screen TVs.

I think I mumped stuff up in that service menu while fumbling through your generic instructions.  How do I reset all that crap?

um. lol.  uh oh.
there is some service menu stuff that you can't "reset" without having the original settings unique to your exact television written down somewhere.

In cycling through all the different levels of service menu stuff, I hit a button that changed one of the value instead of going to another level.  So it went from 0 to 1.  I kept pushing it until it would cycle back to 0 and it got to 15 and stopped.  The black background of that menu screen was getting lighter as I did it.  I can't tell anymore with all the rough ridin' around I've been doing on it whether there's any change when I've got Basketball Wives or whatever actually on the screen.  There does appear to be a small amount of flickering at times, but I don't know if that's from whatever janky lamp I put in or from whatever I did in the service menu or maybe the whole thing just needs to be moved out to JW's pool ASAP and replaced.
try unplugging the set, if you didn't save the change, it will revert to it's previous setting.

if that doesn't work you just need to find the "down" button, here's what i found-
1      item up
4      item down
3      data up
6      data down

  Will try.

IT WORKED!

T-Y, clams.  There may have been a couple other values I changed like by 1, but nothing extreme like the one I found again and got back to where it was.  No ore flickering, but eff you taco ball doritos loco taco commercial that ends with a black screen and the taco bell logo kind of flickering that made me think it was still broke for a second.

OU game pak at my house with my big ass rear projection TV.  I've even got an extra lamp now in case this one blows up.

Somebody let me know when those new 55-inch sonys drop another $500 and we'll do the whole debate between steve dave's, the non-3d and whatever ChiCat was talking about all over again.

Good work all around.

On another note, what cleaning solution are all you LED owners using for your TV? Whatever I use looks hazy/streaky afterwards.

I just use water to dampen a microfiber cleaning cloth for touchscreens/any other screen.

WNK's AV Tip of the Week:

NEVER buy an HDMI cable from the Best Buy's of the world.  A 20ft HDMI cable priced at $8 online compared to a known brand 20ft HDMI cable priced at $45 will give the user the same results.  Wish I would have went into the AV cable business.  Some of them make 500% profit.  Obviously they have a great Marketing team.
