I don't think it is sexist, I think it is more about the father passing the torch to the future husband. Seriously though, I asked my FIL because it was important to my wife. I largely defer to her regarding her side of the family. If she didn't care about it, I wouldn't have bothered.
That's just a hippie way of asking permission
