"My brother and I didn't know who Coach Self was back then," he added. "We didn't even know who Danny Manning was."
We've had some good fortune," Self said. “There's no question about it.

"We had good fortune, and my BFF Doug Compton's cash" . . . Bill Self on his success at ku.I will congratulate ku on one thing . . . they actually brought in a rich white walk on that was a pretty decent to darn good high school player. They haven't had a rich white walk on that was really good in high school for awhile. Kleinmann avg 14 points a game in high school, but the kid was 6-10 playing in ginger land for crying out loud. I suspect that hard lifestyle Matt lived growing up shooting hoops on his $2,500 Gorilla Goal in Regency by the Lake in Overland Park really made him aware of the plight of fellow teammates from poor backgrounds. Oh, by-the-way Matt's dad Calvin is president and CEO of the Private Bank, a private investment/banking firm in Kansas City. So lets review some current or recent walk-ons at ku:Chase Buford- Dad is President/GM of the Spurs. Connor Teahan- Dad is CFO of Shaw Construction in KC Matt Kleinmann- Dad is President and CEO of a private banking firm in KC. Nice, cozy, easy, practically untraceable way to funnel cash into the hands of star players. When Larry Brown was there they used to do this with the JV team. Imagine a JV team at a place like Kansas, that had guys on it that didn't even make their high school Basketball Team . . . but, they just happened to come from rich white JoCo families. The pinnacle of this could have been if Douglas Compton Jr. actually would have been given a walk-on spot, an idea that was bantered about for awhile last summer. Douglas Compton, the kid avg 2.9 ppg at Free State.
Is paying players actually against the NCAA rules?
