Here's my take, sorry about the spacing crap:
I thought overall the team looked pretty good, yeah, there were some ragged spots but for the most part, every player appeared to know what his role is and we've got some talent to make things happen.
Rodriguez will make this engine run, he's just a crafty penetrator and facilitator, outstanding court vision and delivery on his passes, he puts the ball in the open man's hands in a position where he can do something with it, yeah, he made a couple mistakes but that's going to come with the high level of creativity he brings to the court, I don't want to see him lose his aggressive playmaking style. He had a nice finish on the break and knocked down a trey during the scrimmage.
McGruder looked like solid, blue collar Rod to me. Wasn't overly aggressive offensively, which was just fine for this setting, didn't finish real well on the break(normally a strength for him), jumper looks good, during 1 stretch he knocked down a jumper from the elbow curling around a screen and the next time down the floor he knocked down a triple from the wing coming off a screen. I bet Weber had a broad smile after sequence.
Lawrence drained a couple of threes during the scrimmage, 1 of which came in the final 15 seconds of 1 of the "mini scrimmages" that was the game-winning bucket for his team. Was attacking off the dribble in the early part of the workout, didn't do it much during the scrimmage, he might have actually evolved into a spot up threat from deep for us, we'll just have to wait and see on that.
Williams was active and aggressive, got some buckets on put backs, got to the line quite a bit(I think he went about 4-8 there), knocked down a 15 footer. Saw the great majority, if not all of his minutes at the 4. I'm not sold that will be a long-term solution for him or this team(simply not big enough), but could be effective in spot duty as and energy/effort guy as he appeared to be today.
Johnson aka "DJamer" does not look like he is going to hurt us. He's big and strong enough to hold his ground in the paint(at least 6'8" and got some meat on him) and still moves fairly well. Finished very well around the rim, I believe he had 10 pts in the scrimmage and all came on put backs and strong finishes while being defended in the paint(He's a lefty, 1 was right-handed). I thought it was very encouraging to see an incoming FR like him be able to play physically and effectively in the paint like that.
Orris looked OK out there, solid ballhandler and passer, wasn't outclassed matched up with anybody, didn't score in the scrimmage but shot looks alright from deep. If he can become a consistent spot up shooter from deep, he could help us down the road.
Irving looked like our 2nd best guard today. Handled it well, passed it well, shot it well, took it to the rim well, just impressed with his overall play and apparent improvement.
