Loud Talkers

I rough ridin' hate them. Worst thing is, I'm one of them. I think it has something to do with being a younger sibling. You feel the need to talk over everyone to be heard. How do you fix this problem? How can I hate something that I am?

I do this.  I also appreciate others who do because I am hard of hearing.  Actually, I think the hearing part may be some of the reason I talk loud.  Also I want to make sure everyone hears what I have to say because it is very important.

Well, ya, I mean when SD talks, you shut the eff up, and listen. I feel this is true for me as well. I mean what I say might be Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!), but I'm sure you'll get a grin out of it, so listen people.

You know what people can't hear you over? That Hummer that you're wrecking people's crap up with.

I think what my friend Mitch is trying to say is that true love is blind.

Oh, man. Forgot to tell you BTK that I upgraded my rental to a hummer. I've ran off 5 cars since, one bursted into flames, and i've ran off 7 people from a cross walk. Things have really picked up for me. THANKS FOR THE ADVICE (Just tried to talk over SD who was trying to chime in while I posted this).

I nearly typed this exact thing.  I, too, have poor hearing (too many guns and concerts).

It is definitely true for me. Especially with a the consumption of only a couple drinks. That is enough for me to forget I have a hearing problem, so I start talking louder because I can't hear myself (I know, like you have to hear yourself, right?).

I am also bad in bars or crowded restaurants.  For some reason, I can hear all the background noise super good, but not the conversation at my own table.  It's weird.  It's like my ears can't focus on the right thing.

I've had to literally scream when talking to my parents since I was a kid. Dad lost most of his hearing in 'nam and refuses to get hearing aids.

humans differ in needed s/n (signal to noise) ratio in order to understand speech in background just like they differ in ability to throw and run and jump. some people are good at it, others are not. this is true even for people with normal ears and hearing. it's a brain processing thing.

or you just might actually have hearing loss. human speech is complex and made up of many different frequencies at varying levels of loudness/intensity. completely normal hearing with even just mild high freq loss (that could have been caused by noise exposure) could and would also lead to inability to understand speech well in noise. high frequency parts of speech are not very loud. examples include f, t, k, s and a few other consonant sounds. low freqs blend together so you really need good high freq hearing to kick ass when there are a lot of other people talking.

Pretty sure I have a combo thing happening.  I am not real hard of hearing, but not perfect either.  I def have the bad s/n thingy for for places with a hundred other people talking around me.

aren't the high freqs are the first to go from hearing damage?

 :ohno:

join the other ten percent of americans that also have tinnitus then. tinnitus is a symptom though and not a diagnosis. it is being caused by something else and in your case it is more than likely being caused by damage to your cochlea/inner ear, which is subsequently resulting in hearing loss and ringing. things that tend to increase tinnitus severity include: stress, lack of sleep, noise exposure, sodium, nicotine, caffeine and alcohol.

people can lose hearing in a hundred different ways/patterns from a hundred different things. presbyacusis (hearing loss from aging) tends to be very gradual and works from the highs down to the lowers. hearing loss from noise exposure damages hearing most significantly just above and below 4,000Hz. both would be considered higher frequencies and both would cause issues like you are having because both would be affecting your ability to hear the soft high frequency consonant parts of speech that are crucial for understanding in noise as ambient noise tends to concentrate in mid and lowers. at our peak, humans can hear between 20-20,000 Hz but human speech is primarily comprised of sounds between 500-5,000 Hz.
