EPA/OHSA experts . . .
« on: July 03, 2012, 02:42:58 PM »
is it legal to sandblast an auto body in open air . . . in the middle of an office/industrial park?

FYI . . . I'm not doing it, but some jack leg is across the street from my office.

Doesn't appear as if the operator his wearing any protective/breathing gear.   I don't care about him, I just care about all the particulate that's just blowing in the wind.

So I call the rednecks at the county environmental services.  They aren't too worried about it, then again, they probably do it all weekend long.

Would Hawkhost know clams?

unless it's a silica sand, and it's likely not, there would be no regulation prohibiting it.  Most "sandblasting" is done with inert materials, not silica sand as it is a carcinogen.

if particle size is 1.1 mm/grain, slope angle is 32 degrees, and spraying velocity is 74 km/h, my research tells me that you should have a rock slide crushing your place of business in about 10 minutes.

OSHA is a horrible, horrible organization. You can get fined $8000 for not having a piece of paper on what do do if you accidentally drink 409 cleaner.

then just print out a rough ridin' piece of paper.  seems a lot easier than paying 8000 dollars.

This is where safety managers come in. They keep records of everything safety/training related. They know everything they need to know so you do not get fined out your ass by OSHA. Aside from that, they're incredibly lazy and often very fat. Im not convinced its a full time job even.

Ive started thinking that OSHA is some kind of inside job by fat/lazy people to create jobs for themselves where they put in a couple hours of work each day but hey, they're the experts!

it's easier to just subscribe to an MSDS service that can instantly provide one for every product known to man.

speaking of OSHA
i was just watching these two workers outside my office window.  they were trying to lift one of two very large steel plates that were not on top of the road, but actually cut into the road.
these were the big rectangle plates, 2 inch thick ones, not the smaller ones.    probably 12' by 10'.

one guy was driving a bobcat and he stuck the loader scoop thing into the road crack between the steel plate and the road and was able to lift the plate up about a foot and a half.  the other guy is on his knees looking under the plate for something.  he then reaches under the plate feeling around for something and has 1/2 to 3/4  of his arm down there.
guess what happens next.

He scampers underneath and occasionally slightly lifts the plate to peer out

close.  the plate slipped off the loader and down onto his arm and he was pinned, screaming.  the bobcat guy is scrambling to get the plate back up but it takes him like 30 seconds (also while doing so, he may have driven onto the plate).  the guy pulls what's left of his arm out and runs around in the street for at least 5 minutes screaming.
then i lost him behind a dumptruck.

i was sitting there watching him and thinking to myself, do not put your arm under there, this is so OSHA.  sure enough.
