I'm baffled as to how Massachusetts can be the 2nd least likely to swear but the 2nd least courteous. Massachusetts being 2nd on the non swearing is garbage, pretty big lol for Texas for also appearing on that list. I have two interns from Ohio and not only don't they swear but they do that super annoying and cheesy have dumb alternative words for swears thing, so WASPy.

I would think states with large populations of WASPy churchgoers, the plains states, would be least likely to curse

yeah lol at texas on that list. maybe in the really baptisty parts, but in the cities everyone's cussing up a storm.

Personally do my best not to cuss around kids, but it's more about trying to not look like a barbarian around other people rather than ruin some sort of societal ideal of childhood innocence. They'll hear some vile stuff at school pretty early on (there's always some trash parent that has their kid cussing by kindergarten that ends up on the school bus with everyone). I cuss at football games a lot so I've dropped a few before and then noticed the presence of a kid nearby and felt pretty .

My filter is pretty damned strong around old people and my mother. Around my father or friends it's sailor time. Work depends on the situation and my relationship with the coworker or boss.

Kids: Never.
Friends: All the time.
Colleagues: All the time.
Supervisors: Every now and then.
Those who work for me: Every now and then during casual conversation. On a casion when briefing and/or lecturing to ensure the point is driven home. I'm in a different line of work than most. Throwing 4 syllable words isn't going to impress anyone or get people's ass in gear, but dropping a few F bombs can ensure the gravity of the situation and explicitly convey my thoughts with no chance of misinterpretation.

I have an automatic filter, when I am around my grandparents or work I don't curse like at all.  When I am around my bros or when that person doesn't know how to rough ridin' drive and you about hit them because they are being rough ridin' stupid and they probably shouldn't have their license anymore, I usually curse more.

Mrs. Gooch and I were flying first class (#fanningbrag) to Cancun and damn near drank the plane dry of Vodka. In our drunken state we were discussing how much the wings on the new Boeing 777 bend in flight (Mrs. Gooch is an airplane nerd). I may have used the term eff-ton 2 or 20 times. Some poors (non first class) in the row behind us did not appreciate it. They really need something more than a curtain to separate US from them.

there is a lot of variance in how much people swear. i'd say only 10% are people who never cuss.

i swear a ton, but i like to think that i exercise good tact unless i'm pretty drunk. i really enjoy sophisticated old people who can talk for several hours without a cuss word and then blow the doors off the conversation with a "i don't give a crap about what that rough ridin' coward says...."
