thanks MiR. was gonna say there were some really shitty takes flying around ITT

For the record, I was never saying Simone removing herself for her mental issues was bogus, or inappropriate.  She should have done what she did.  I think her coaches failed big time in getting her ready.  Obviously the Olympic women's gymnastic coaches are giant POS, so it's not surprising, but the pressure on her to perform and win in 2020 started immediately after she did so in 2016.  There needs to be more attention put on them for not getting her mentally ready, imo.  And then them coming out and saying she is going to get professional help in Japan and come back in less than a week and compete was ridiculous.

Yeah, she can do w/e she wants she's earned it, I just think if it's some ploy to eff over gymnastics overall then own it, would be an awesome take down, if she truly wasn't ready then there needs to be more discussion on clearly issue on the gymnastics team of not respecting the wishes of their gymnasts. Both IMO would help reveal better the dark under toe of one of the worst segments of olympics sports anyways, but I guess that's just me.

What's done is done, it's disappointing to end such a marvelous career like that, but her call, her life and she gets to do what she wants.

Based on her performance to the point she quit, I don't really think the team would have won silver with her out there. I think it's really just as simple as she got the yips, was mature enough to recognize it, and cared about her team enough to step back and let someone who would do better go out and salvage a silver medal.

I think a lot of people either don't know or forgot about her being assaulted by Nasser. I am also certain that people didn't know that Strug actually didn't need to do that vault, didn't know the nature of her injury, at the time we thought it was "just" a sprained ankle, and I'm definitely sure 99.95% of casual Olympics watchers, even those who are devoted sports fans don't know about the Karoli's history of physical and mental a use of their gymnasts.

Team handball is pretty great. Looks like a lot of fun to play.
If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

Oh my yes, easily my favorite odd summer Olympic sport. I love the pace, and this sort of weird mashing of soccer, hockey, and water polo

What is can't miss for the remaining week? Obviously women's soccer if the ladies pull this game out. Still live in basketball. Water polo? Volleyball? What you got?

I'll be into some of the track events.  I like relays in both track and swimming.  I feel like you occasionally see one person just dominate to win a medal for their mediocre team.

women's water polo! they are probably the best but lost a tough game and should have competitive games in the bracket

also I just want to say Mike Tirico is a delight as a host. I'm just happy when I watch him talk about this stuff!

Bubba Starling is playing for the USA baseball team.  They smoked Israel to kick off their olympics.

maine, i watched the bulk of a women's soccer game for the first time in forever, and i don't know about this whole thing...there is definitely good skill out there but every 3 minutes or so there is some absolutely heinous gaffe made...terrible backpass, waiting on the ball forever, etc...80% of netherlands goal kicks toward the end turned into a counter for the us, and they couldn't adjust...

relay swimming is really fun as a tv sport.  even more fun when your team is king kong on swim steroids.  USA is incredibly young, we can expect ass whippings and world records for probably as long as most of us will give a crap.

Know what the great thing about our swimmers is? I keep getting older; they stay the same age. That is, every time our Olympians age out, we always have more coming up in the pipeline. We seem well positioned to continue dominating this sport. Samesies with Gymnasty.

yeah, agreed.  I think US swim doesn't get enough credit for churning out world record winners and just dominating.  Our track team needs to take note.

Man, bummer way to lose. Random penalty on the edge of the box that was pretty meaningless ends up costing them. VAR hasn't been kind to us.
