Motorcycles
« on: April 26, 2012, 03:47:51 PM »
I'm thinking about getting my first one soon. I don't know anything about motorcycles, other than they are dangerous (thanks mom). Any experienced riders on here want to give me some beginner tips on what to get, how to ride, what to do, etc. tips? I know I have to get a special license or whatever and plan on doing that this summer.

My main question is what is a good beginner type of bike?

I have ridden probably 7,000 miles on my Yamaha Vino and it is incredible. Just a real feeling of freedom.

This is what I'm hoping for. Plus gas and junk.

Unless you live in a congested urban environment a motorcycle seems pretty stupid

There are other benefits sd. I work like almost 10 miles out of town and pay about $50 a week on gas.

Plus, I just want one for impractical purposes.

(p.s., who rides motorcycles on a crowded NY street? seems like a death sentence)

I almost bought this one three years ago.

I ended up getting a Genuine Buddy.  It was fun.  I wrecked it and broke my collar bone and would have probably died if I didn't have a full face helmet on.  go cats.

I got my bike last summer.  07 suzuki gs500.  For a beginner bike, that would depend on what type of riding you want to do.  Do you want a sport bike that is the most impractical, and get laid by tons of models?  Or do you want a cruiser which is more comfortable for longer rides and get laid by worn down strippers and late 30's early 40's something single moms and eventually pay money to ride in Harley day at BSFS when you are 60?

I've never understood the appeal of motorcycles.  guess I just don't like the idea of dying or being paralyzed.  2 of my best friends are motorcycles geeks.  they trailered their bikes down to arizona and rode them up through LA and san francisco and back to arizona.  they talk about it a lot.  sounds miserable to me.

There are a lot of things that can kill you.  Motorcycles are fun.  Also, chicks dig motorcycles.

I already posted which kinds of motorcycles will attract those kinds of girls.  Thanks, LukeSOC.

I bet side car gals are nice, clean, fun and only slightly less easy than the girls that dig reg bikes

The newer Kawasaki Ninja 250's are an excellent beginner bike. Plus they look cool, are cheap, and get excellent gas mileage.

Have you never ridden any kind of motorcycle at all?  If so, I would suggest an old dual sport dirt bike.  Learning what happens when you lock up a wheel is a lot easier on the body and wallet in the dirt than pavement.

Also, go here http://nm.msf-usa.org/msf/ridercourses.aspx and find a course near you that provides bikes, it can't be beat for someone with little riding experience.

First, I recommend taking a motorcycle riding class.  You get your license when you complete the course and it's very informative.  Make sure you have all the recommended riding gear.  Depending on what type of bike (sport/cruiser/cafe) you are looking for, you will want to try out a few different ones.  Find one comfortable for you.  Also, I recommend starting out with a more timid engine, but don't be afraid of the bigger bikes as well.  If that's what is most comfortable to you and it's what you are wanting, go for it.  I started out on a Honda CBR1000, you just have to get used the bike and it's power.

Vespa scooters are great for beginners.

My buddy goes to Wash U in STL, had his vespa stolen 2 weeks ago. It was locked up but the guys just lifted it up and put it in the back of a pickup.
