Sirius vs XM
« on: April 05, 2012, 12:48:42 PM »
I remember having this discussion last year, but I couldn't find it in my 30 seconds of searching, don't remember the advice given, and am actually ready to pull the trigger this year.

Which should I get and why?  if it helps, live in NE KS, follow the Wild Wild Cats, listen to sports radio a lot but hate the crap out of baseball's face, listen to talk radio(non sports) quite a bit too, and also want a good selection of pretty much all kinds of music as well.

thoughts from those who know about such stuff?

TIA.

I will say this, I got a year for free when I bought my new vehicle and it is going to be damned hard not to start paying for it when the year is up.  Excellent business move to include it free with new auto purchases.

protip:  let it expire.  after a month or so, they'll start sending you letters with great deals for you to sign up.  let it expire every time and they'll keep doing that.

I listen to the BBC World business report on my way to work every day.  At the end of it they do sports.  They always talk about cricket and I'm always like, "lol, what are you silly limeys talking about!?  wickets?  each batter scores like 100 runs before they get out?  lol omg"

have had it for about 10 years.  Hate getting a rental car that doesn't have it when traveling for work.  Love the music channels (Pearl Jam Radio  ) and baseball, news and stuff.  I pay a year at a time and tell them I am going to cancel every time and they give me 3 months.  Then I call and say I don't want it again and they start offering it for really cheap.

Pro tip: they are the worst company in the world to deal with and the above strategy, while sound, is very frustrating and will probably take you 3 days or so to accomplish.  They have horrendous customer service, but it is worth the effort as you can always get them to get you a better deal.

It's cheap as crap to begin with. I'll pay the $120 for the year or whatever and call it a day.

They merged, but are still seperate.  Each company has like 5 exclusive channels, but for like 2 dollars a month you can get the opposite companies channles as well.

Example, sirius has howard stern, xm has opie and anthony.

I have xm only for o&a, and is easily the best spent money for entertainment to me since I am on the road 2 or so hours a day usually.

Also can confirm the worst customer service company in the world.

This is what I did, but recently got a new car and it is a Sirius car and I had an XM sub and it was a big freaking deal to switch for some reason so I figured they owed me for being on the phone 3 hours to switch it (btw, you can't switch it even though they are the same company.  You have start a new service with Sirius which takes an hour, then they have to send you over to XM to "the cancellation guy" when he tries to give you free service to stay on even though you are still a subscriber, you just switched to the other side.  It doesn't matter that you tell them that, they still don't want to lose you as a subscriber even though they really aren't losing you, they are just dumbass horrible people and have no idea what they are doing.  Plus I have every station for both channels including interweb so it is more than $120 a year.  That is about what I am paying now for everything though.

I hate radio "jocks" or whatever so all of that crap can GTFOOMF.  I just like having BBC World, SiriusXMU, tons of hip hop/R&B channels, every sporting event and the option to make my favorite artists favorites so it warns me if they are coming on and I just punch the screen and it goes to whatever station they are on.

I will say this, I got a year for free when I bought my new vehicle and it is going to be damned hard not to start paying for it when the year is up.  Excellent business move to include it free with new auto purchases.

I was supposed to have 3 months free on my last new car but they forgot to cancel it and we had it for over a year...until my wife totaled the car.  I'm guessing we would've had it free forever.  We'll see what happens this time around.

Protip:  You can't just let your subscription expire when the time's up.  Hidden in the TOS is a clause that automatically renews and extends your subscription for 3 months after the end of your contract.  They're actually in a few class action lawsuits about this practice.  Not sure if they're doing it or not, but I found out the hard way.  Had a collection agency start bugging me one day until I PI'd the eff out of them and told them they were wasting their time.  They gave up pretty quick.
