Can someone tell me is $2.85/lb for half a grass fed cow a good deal?  It's the hanging weight and then there is $.45/lb processing fee.

Doesn't seem unreasonable.  Split a side with my brother-in-law recently and paid just over $3/lb total.  Don't think it was grass-fed, but who knows.... I know that I am beef-fed now, so that's what matters.

I'd recommend getting as little of it made into hamburger as possible.  Buy hamburger at the store.  You'll save the most money (relative to store price) by getting as many roast, steaks, etc made.

Grain/corn fed is what my old roomie(feed lot guy) used to say is what to buy.  No clue on price.

That is a little high. I used to sell locker beef for $1.50 lb  + and customer would pay to butcher the processing fee. Though that is corn fed.

Seriously, grass fed? Do you live in California?!

No, but that Food, Inc movie turned me into a hippie.  In reality I think grass fed tastes better but its expensive to buy in the stores.  Looking at the half cow to cut the cost

This.  Grass fed is far superior to grain/corn fed in every way.

I wouldn't say it made my taste buds change, I have always preferred grass fed since I first ate it a few years ago.  The movie I think just made me more willing to take the effort and extra cash needed to go for buying the cow.

Not so much a change in taste, but there are numerous health concerns that do shape what I put in my body these days.  I've been trying to consume as little high fructose corn syrup as possible, (studies suggest it's a leading cause of belly weight gain and I already drink enough beer to handle that for me) but it's in freaking everything.

So, cows are naturally supposed to eat corn and grains?  Seems pretty elementary to me that drastically altering an animals diet would have negative consequences..

Were humans predestine to live in houses, drive cars, and wear pants?

Looks like you have a few other changes you need to get to making along with your food.

Also, you may want to avoid medicine that is not in herb form as well as anything electronic.

The preconceived conclusion in this case being that an unnatural corn rich diet is known to cause unhealthy side effects in cows and subsequently the food that we eat. The only propaganda, to me, has been the effort to keep this knowledge from the general public.

JFC man, there's a difference between being Amish and wanting to eat meat from a cow that won't explode and die if its not slaughtered in time due to its corn-rich diet.

I was making a point. Pretty much anything can be spun to make it sound bad.

You cell phone may be giving you brain cancer, The paint/drywall/carpet in your house may harm your lungs due to VOC's, your old shoes are filling up landfills and contaminating ground water.

Look, I am not on either end of the spectrum when it comes to things like this, but the emphasis people put on things can be silly sometimes.

Enjoy your cow.

That's a pretty decent price. And from a progressive rancher it's good to see consumers who are educated about grass fed beef.

Ooh, nice outfit. What is that, Dacron?

If your worried about health, buy a 1/2 of buffalo.  It is the healthiest meat you can get.  Cost me like 3.50 per pound for a quarter.
