Need NOLA . . .

suggestions.

Have been there twice, but once was a long time ago, and the other was for a corporate event during the free welding spending days of now defunct telecom equipment providers who were footing a huge chunk of the bill.

Check out Frenchman Street to sample music outside the Quarter. It's a bit bohemian but definitely quieter than the quarter and within walking distance. Great small venues, bars, bookstores, coffee shops, etc. Doesn't smell like barf and breast milk.

I go once a year. Don't spend all of your time on bourbon st. Rent a car and drive around. Hit up magazine st about 6 miles up the road. It's a really cool and trendy street. I like the aquarium there and I also like taking the boat up the river.

I am going this year too and don't want to rent a car.  How is the public trans?

It's like only $2 one way on that train thing. Real cheap. Everything is close too.

The streetcar is adorbs but won't take you everywhere. Refusing to rent a car is actually a pretty good idea, because most hotels charge like an extra $30-$35 a day on parking alone, so it's often cheaper to just cab it.

Yeah, we are staying here:

and hoping it isn't a big deal to walk most everywhere(safety wise).

Yeah you should be within walking distance to most stuff in The French Quarter and on Frenchman St., and you're not super far from streetcar access, I don't think.

DON'T spend all your time in the French Quarter. Go the the WWII museum like a boss. It is incredible. Eat at Jacque Imo's (worth the cab ride and the $30 entrees).  When you go there, get the alligator cheesecake. Holy eff. It's amazing. Mother's Restaurant (nearer to the Superdome on Poydras) is also pretty solid and a bit cheaper. Oh and the Camellia Grill is also amazing.

Thanks.

We are going on a airboat swamp tour and a walking/drunken ghoast tour.  Haven't lined anything else out yet.  Planning on hitting one or two of the restraunts that made it on Diners Drive ins and Dives and I am sure the wife will want to do some shopping.  Have done the french market thing so we won't be wasting half a day there...

She'll want to go shopping on Magazine St. Go down there with her and do other stuff. It's amaze-balls.  What two restaurants were on D, D-Is, & Ds?  I don't know what they are, but take my food recommendations before anything else. Jacque-Imo's is probably the best meal I've ever had.

*Edit: Dick & Jenny's on Tchopatoulas St. is really good too, but also a little pricy. Should be no problem for a :kstategrad: though.

Have heard good things about Jacque adn D&J's.  Will def hit.  Not sure what the names of the TripleD ones were.  I need to go back and find them again.  Just something we saw this winter and wanted to try.

Any touristy things to keep away from?

Willie Mae's Scotch House  :lick:

Touristy but the Muffaletta at the Central Grocery is out of sight.

I mean I guess Bourbon is as touristy as it gets, but you know what? eff it! It's fun. Get shitfaced one night and meet a bunch of weirdos down there if you haven't before.  Cafe du Monde is touristy too I guess, but it's also good and fun, so....eff it.  Go if you haven't before.

Every day in New Orleans must start with a café latte and an order of beignets at Café du Monde.  Touristy or not, it’s mandatory.

For lunch, Mother’s is great if you’ve never been, or get a po boy at Verti Marte.  If it’s Friday, go to Gallatoire’s; get there early and cancel the rest of your day.

Go to Cochon for a sazerac at cocktail time, and the food’s not bad, so stay for dinner.  If you aren’t near Cochon for cocktails, go to the bar at Arnaud’s and hope you get the autistic bar tender.  Tell him to suggest a cocktail, and after he freaks out a little, he will do you right.  Food is okay there, too, or walk to Antoine’s for the oysters Rockefeller.  But there are a ton of great places to eat all over.  If you aren’t eating well in NO, you are doing yourself a grave disservice.

If you need to kill some time, go to Aiden Gill for Men and/or Style Lab for Men, then have a drink at the Columns Hotel.

No, denied. Once is enough. Anything more on a finite vacation is a waste of valuable NOLA time, especially when you could be on Magazine St. eating a dope-ass breakfast at Slim Goodie's instead.

This is what I'm looking for.  Been to NOLA before, but not as anything older than a late teenager.  Been to du Monde before.  Beignets are legit, but also remember that you can get them elsewhere.  This vacation is a mission to find the dope-ass.

I welcome all that fits that category.

Also, gonna be there for a long weekend(in early Fri, out mid Mon), if that is worth anything.

F'real.  The WWII museum is incredible if you care even a little bit about history. There's this, like, 4D movie production thingy in the Victory Theater across the street that is totally worth the extra hour and nine bucks. It's produced by Tom Hanks or something.  Get there and wait in the hall about 15-20 minutes before showtime to get a good seat. For real. Worth it.

Also, there's a street that intersects St. Charles called Peniston. Go stand by the street sign and giggle a bunch at a street name that has penis in it.  This is where I randomly bumped into Weird Robert's Foam Finger one time. We sniffed out the goEMAW on each other and shook hands and verbally BBS'd on the street while our ladies got bored. It was nice.

Yeah, I am gonna try to talk the wife into the WWII thing.  I love that crap but will probs have to trade out the rest of that day to get her to go along.

Or just tell her to go shopping then. The WWII museum and Magazine aren't all that far apart from each other.

Or just tell her you'll take her to get a dessert delicacy from Sucre (on Magazine) as a reward for coming along with you. (You should do this anyway, FWIW.)

this just could be the makings of a good ol' fashioned NOLA-OFF that goEMAW has been dreadfully needing for years.
