Remember that stage they were building yesterday in our neighborhood? Well, it got bulldozed this morning. By late afternoon, it was back and bigger than ever. Violent little Amish, I tell you.

Too bad a stable country can't be rebuilt overnight.  Amish suck at politics I guess.

Here's a video of the gunfire spreading into the nicer suburbs where we live. WARNING: there's a bawab that gets killed.

Pro-tip:  we don't know what a bawab is.

It was the doorman that rolled backward down the steps from the bldg immediately to the right of the balcony that the filming was taking place on.

Was that a machine gun?  Looked/sounded like a giant can of canned air.

Is school and work and whatever people there normally do during the day just canceled indefinitely?

Yeah, mostly. Lots of cafes and other small service industry stuff stay open, because all this is good for business (assuming your not Coptic, in which case you're probably already cowering inside a burning church).

Even the oil companies and the military contractors are evacuating staff after yesterday. The brother of my sister-in-law (I don't know the term for this) happened to live down the street from us. He has to leave tomorrow. In a moment of true Arab comedy, he's going to his hometown of Beirut.

After the initial wave of "this just in" reporting, NPR and Daily Beast usually have some interesting articles about the Egyptians still working amid all this crap (although Daily Beast may draw back a bit after their correspondent got the crap beat out of him by police Wednesday).
"How will I recruit to Manhattan? Well, distance. And the proud state of basketball. It start there, and then daily flights to Dallas, because I'm really good at going out. Like top five good. Ask my wife. She wants me to be happy."

Ironically, Tahrir and the downtown area are some of the quietest places in Cairo the last few days.

Where she lives may be a different story (cause she refused to listen to me and move to Zamalek). DeVere, let me know if you want me to run a scan on her neighborhood.
