So if this deadline hits, is the military going to threaten to actually kill Morsi or how does all of this work?

Non lethal defenestration, more likely.
"Defenestration" sounds pretty lethal.

What are their major complaints with Morsi's job performance?

Same as everywhere (economy, education, infrastructure) plus some chavista type moves with different branches of gov. I mean, he's legitimately been a dick and authoritarian, but I still think this is a bad move (meaning the non lethal defen).

Look. I'm not gonna lie. I overreacted here. But in my defense, it's like Dlew doesn't even know that I know a guy who used to post live from Prague.

I love how every time there's political unrest in a country like that one of the first orders of business is to suspend the constitution. at some point don't you question whether it even makes sense to waste time writing a constitution?

What do you "country like that"?/What do you mean "those people"?

Democracy is hard. We had the heavy lifting done long ago and have moved on to fights about dongs and dongs/hoots.
:dubious:

I'm referring to new/young wanna-be democracies.  a constitution is pretty rough ridin' important to the stability of a democracy and if you go around suspending it when the crap hits the fan (which is exactly what they were designed for...to be a baseline/fallback for when things get really messed up) it will never have the power it needs for the democracy to function properly.  maybe wait until there's a little bit more stability to write the constitution or at least start with the basics that virtually everyone can agree on so it's not wadded up and thrown in the trash every other year.

there's probably no good answer.  it just seems like a waste.  what's the point of having a constitution if it's going to be suspended and/or re-written every time there's a change in power?

The constitution allows you to say that, unless it's changed, then you won't be allowed to any more.

But the constitution says it can be suspended from time to time, so even when it was suspended, it wasn't suspended.

Worth pointing out here that you are referring to an amendment to the original constitution.

I don't think they tried very hard. Including blasphemy doesn't bode well for long term success.

Laziness is probably in their DNA, (like hard work and smarts are in America's). felix, confirm?

That was mainly a federalism issue.  I don't think Egypt is federalist but could be wrong.

Basically if the US was the size of Egypt the AoC would've been 100% perfectexcept for the slavery

We're just saying that it's a little unfair to hold a relatively new democracy like Egypt to a standard ("never suspend certain parts of the constitution") that the US didn't didn't meet as recently as ~150 years after the Constitution was created.

I think a new constitutional convention would be a great idea. I mean, a lot has changed on the world since the first one, and people are a lot smarter now than they were back then.

there's kind of a really big difference between suspending the constitution and making a decision as a nation to replace it.
