If that's your goal, there are other extenders that support many more file formats than Appletv. Roku with Plex would be best and cheapest, honestly.

Correct. You also need a Plex server. But you can also play any file type known to man.

i have a smart tv, i just want to mirror my phone/imac onto my television.  aTv is the only way to do it in my environment. 

roku needs to step up and support airplay otherwise they can go shove a pile of crap into their nostrils.

won't happend.   Roku is partnered with Amazon, which makes them a competitor to Apple.

so what.  if roku was smart, they'd steal customers from apple by offering the same thing as apple (airplay support), and the other crap they offer.  it doesn't have to be one or the other.  unless google says so.  which would be dumbass for roku to enter into an agreement that limits their functionality.

only Airplay can decode the DRM on Itunes media, until they gain the rights to that, it'd be useless.  And Apple isn't going to give that away.
