Awesome things people around you are giving up for Lent
« on: February 25, 2012, 12:08:35 PM »
The lady in front of me at the liquor store last night bought two bottles of wine, a fifth of vodka, and a lottery ticket. But "no beer this time; I'm giving that up for Lent."

"How will I recruit to Manhattan? Well, distance. And the proud state of basketball. It start there, and then daily flights to Dallas, because I'm really good at going out. Like top five good. Ask my wife. She wants me to be happy."

I had sushi last night because of lent.  90% of the time when I call my local sushi place for a pick up it is ready by the time I get there.  Last night I waited 10 minutes before I left the house and still had to wait 15 minutes for it to be ready.  When I paid I asked the little lady running the register if they were busy, she said it was the busiest night they have had in the 9 months since they opened and she didn't know why.  I told her to expect the same for the next 5 Fridays.  After I told her why she got excited and I saw $$$ in her eyes.
I got a guy on the other line about some white walls

I think it has its merits.

If you are giving up something because it is bad for you and you would rather not do it, I think it is silly to need an outside reason to do so, have some self-control.  If you are just giving up something for the sake of giving it up in some sort of sacrificial sense, why bother?

Fun fact: In 2nd grade, 8manpick was outed by a couple girls in his class as not very religious when he had no idea what they were talking about when they asked what he had given up for Lent.

It's not about giving up something that's bad for you, people that spin it that way are missing the point. The point is to give up something that you love. Something that you "can't live without" A much much smaller sacrifice, but likened to, the one that Jesus made.

I'm not going to let this devolve into an internet theology discussion because those are just the worst, but it is supposed to be sacrificial.  We bother because it's part of our religion and it's important to us.

Also, for what it's worth, I completely understand why people think it's stupid.

Jesus fasted for forty days in the desert....giving up soda in an attempt to victoriously live through his sacrifice is a slap in the face.

I guess I can begrudgingly see the logic in that.  Will attempt not to D-K Dome this thread anymore.
