I always thought it was lint.  Oh well.... People should give up on stupid religions based on total bullshit once a year for at least 40 days.

But sports matter, like, a crap ton though, right?

I'm an atheist, but I like the idea of giving up stuff.  I also did Ramadan one year.

last year alone I practiced Ramadan and Christmas in the same year.
I think what my friend Mitch is trying to say is that true love is blind.

Had a nice convo with Mrs. WonderMeal last night about Lent. She's Catholic, so I'm not sure if this is something that's common w/ Catholics (Paging DLew, esq.) or if she just found it on the online web, but we talked about reflecting during Lent to improve:

-Our relationships w/ each other
-Our relationships w/ the Little WonderMeals
-Our relationships with others
-Our relationships w/ our self (self-improvement), and
-Our relationships w/ God.

Regardless of whether or not you believe in the Flying Spaghetti Monster, I think at least the first four are nice to reflect on every once in a while. If Lent is the catalyst for that reflection great, great. If not, no biggie. JMHO.

One year I thought about only consuming beer for Lent.  I think I read about a monk who did this.  Definitely going to try this in the future.

Sounds like an effective diet plan  :dunno:

Maybe giving up 1 thing a week then switching to something else for a week etc you could learn something, but sheesh 40 days without the same thing, no way.

Not awesome.

You don't think beef is awesome, or it's not awesome that someone might give it up for lent?

I think beef is awesome. I'd never have the balls to give it up for lent.  :frown:

I read a really interesting article about Pope Francis' guidance for what/how to give up for lent.  I am not Catholic, but it was really inspiring.  I rough ridin' love the crap out of Pope Francis.

Essentially the message was that one ought to sacrifice in a way that helps others.  Giving up chocolate is superficial, when compared to giving up a leisure activity to instead volunteer somewhere, for example.  Everything should be viewed through the lens of service to others.

Made me really think a great deal.  Pope Francis is a badass [redacted].

I am going to choose a leisure activity to give up and use that time to volunteer and be of service to others.  I am going to roll with Francis on this one!

That is pretty great, Pete.  Also, hit those fish sandwiches hard as a mother.  It's also what Pope Francis would do.

I read that too Pete, and it was a great thought by Pope Francis. The impact of lent should be a time of reflection and service, he hit both of those!

Yep, he is awesome.  But, I am going to eat meat on Friday, as my Protestant fore fathers did!

But if I give up booze and am nicer to my Uber driver in the process, does that count? Need a ruling from Padre.

First, how is this thread not in the Pit?

Pope Francis makes an excellent point. However, if it takes Lent for you to go out and do good in your community then that seems like a bigger issue.

Lent and sacrifices made during Lent mean different things to different people. In my case, is giving up cheese life changing? Of course not. But you know what, I really enjoy eating cheese and I'm not going to do it for the next 46 days. And every time I feel like I want to give in and have some it will cause a brief moment of reflection of what I am doing.

Religion in general has many aspects that are private and personal. Participate or don't, it's entirely up to each person.
