Frank and his coaching performance this year
« on: February 22, 2012, 04:44:20 PM »
Say that we win out.  He gets another 20 win season, another really good seed in the NCAA's, and a couple wins over top 10 teams.....all the while having a lot of youth as first 7 contributors and a bunch of role players.

His best coaching job yet?  I think yes.

I don't think we need to win out for it to be his best "coaching" performance. Although 2010 was pretty ridic.

2010 feels like a dream that may or may not have actually happened.

Denis and Jake trading the spotlight all season.
Jake v. Jimmer
The Xavier epicness

Then off the court with the CBS inside looks during the tourney, Frank busting onto every national show as a darling, our new Elites.

My god.

Yeah, we are still reaping rewards from that season.

I want to say yes.  I really do…..but…it’s hard for me to say he’s done a good job of making lemonade out of lemons when he’s the one that grew the lemon tree.   I dunno.  He wins out and probably yes.  If this team somehow makes it to the second weekend, then I’ll probably just stfu about frank’s recruiting all together.

I agree that part of the reason the season seems great is because the talent quality of talent is down, but every program has ups and downs in talent.

It's changed on a dime, hasn't it. Before Saturday, this season didn't seem so great.
ISU and A&M could still change perceptions.
I think we have another stinker in us. But some more surprises, too.

It truly is amazing what back to back top 10 road wins will do for you.

It doesn't mean we couldn't still slip, but back to back top 10 road wins also aren't some sort of fluke deal.

Right now, i would say the 09-10 coaching job was his best.    We had talent and some expectations going into that year........ but i dont think many people saw that team coming.
1) Great non con with impressive road wins over Unlv and bama
2)  6-2 on the road in conf
3) Finished 2nd in the conf and spent a lot of time in the top 10 that yr
4) Won 5 postseason games (B12 Tour and ncaa)

Had Frank been able to push the right buttons enough and not let our offense slide so much mid season this year, we would be have a few more wins and then there would be serious debate IMO for this year being his best coaching job

He's the clearcut 3rd best coach in a really good basketball league. I don't think he will ever be the elite recruiter self and Barnes are though.

He's never going to be an elite recruiter, but I still have a gut feeling we're going to finally start getting some name talent coming in (through Frank as opposed to Huggs residual) enough so to consider him a above-average recruiter. Add in that I agree he's top 3 in coaching ability and I really do think Frank is easily one of the best all around head coaches in the league.

I wonder what/where the flip has switched for this team

I honestly wonder if its Sams and #angel in the locker room?  Look at the emotion on the court those two have been showing the last couple games.  I don't recall seeing anything like it this season.  Other things of note, BITB said today they've locked down practices to outside people.  Rodney apparently missed 12 practices in a row (toe?) before practicing right before Baylor.  Perhaps practice time is changing as well, or he doesn't want people to see/hear him cuss/go nuts.

Winning begets winning.  If you win, year over year, and you go to the tournament every year (like we're doing), you'll start getting better kids.  Eventually, as long as you keep your facilities on par with everyone else, you'll get a pretty high level of kids because they'll be attracted to the winning and a coach with a reputation of winning.

Also, put Frank in Austin, and over time, he wins as much, if not more, than Barnes.

This!  If the offense hadn't went stagnant for long periods the following L's could have been W's: WVU, BU, OU, @ISU, @UT, and  KU.  25-2 right know and no question FM's best job and leading candidate for National COY.  BTW, those losses combined were by a total of 26 points.  So only 32 points scored in those games or 16 more made shots and 25-2 is a real possibility.

We are NOT going to win all the close games........... so the 25-2 thought never has  even be considered by me.

At  22-5 and 11-4 conf............ and we would be an Iowa St victory away this Saturday from being ranked in the top 10, with talks of a 2/3 seed being in our sights.

That would have been awesome.   It wasn't that far off.   But it didnt happen.

Our offense was playing well at the end of the non-con and beginning of conf play.   Our defense is playing lights out right now.

We have the confidence of 2 huge wins in a row.   And maybe........... just maybe our offense awoke out of its slump.

Stay tuned.

Offense is always better when you make shots. We had turnover issues, but a lot of our problems were not making shots, many of them good ones. So I'm not going to give Frank too much blame for bad offense, but he also shouldn't get too much credit for good offense. I suppose if you want to go down the recruit better scores/shooters route, go for it.

I do think that the defense has been great, and to me a lot of that is systematic, especially in blending in some new players and having his best defense yet. At this point I'd still put this season behind the Elite 8 team, but this has still been a very good coaching job.

The switch for this team has been a culmination of a few items: 1.Angel being able to stay on the floor much more, 2. rodney seems to be healthy again, 3. JO staying on the floor, and 4. Sprads shooting being a shade better than the horrible show he put on through the middle of the sched.

There are prob others too.
