Nuns
« on: February 07, 2012, 09:46:18 PM »
Anyone else have parents that tell them horror stories about the nuns at their Catholic school? My mom and her brothers and sisters all have scars on the top of their hands from rulers. My uncle has a scar on his leg from one of the nuns. He threw a cat off the fire escape to see if it would land on its feet and got caught, his punishment was 10 ruler swats to the leg.

The nuns at my school were pretty great.  Strict, but never physically abusive, or physical or abusive in any way, really.

Your uncle sounds like an bad person, btw.

Eh...my mom said they would come around during dances and if they couldn't fit a ruler between the two of you, you got hit on the knuckles with it. Aside from that, no horror stories. Although we did go to visit one of her teachers when I was little. The nun, Sister Louise, gave me a hug and pressed her chin on the top of my head. She had really really sharp stubble.

This nun was short we were in 3rd grade and everyone was as tall as her.  She was also in her 70s at this point.

The class was lined up at the door to go to the next class.  Scotty was a trouble maker and he was goofing off again.  Sister Georgiana walks up to him and tells him to straigten up.  Scotty mouths off and she took a swipe at the back of his head.  He dodged it and with out missing a beat she came back with the other hand.  Smacked him right in the face.  Scotty went stiff as a board and looked straight ahead red faced and teary eyed.

Never had anymore trouble with Scotty.

I had a nun that had an imaginary flying cat that would periodically fly around the room during class.

Mainly ignorance. In high school all my friends we're catholic and met on Wednesday nights together. I always remember them studying for some big test they had to take at the end of whatever it was they called their get togethers (which was about catholicism). That was my impression, that and they all had a lot of sex before marriage when they were not suppose to.

I think that you can do whatever you want as long as you say sorry to God afterwards. Pretty sweet deal.

Sure. Again guys I can't stress enough the ignorance I have when it comes to the practices of catholicism. Just reporting my experiences from some fellow catholic friends.

Yes there is some studying, as in most religions. We had to do 100 hours of community service when  I received mine. To me, it is the equivalent to some other Christian faiths where people are "saved." They call it their baptism, Catholics do baptism really early on in life to save the baby from original sin should it die. Confirmation is just one of a list of sacraments to be received, penance, first communion, confirmation, marriage, etc.

As for the sin  forgiveness, you go in and talk to the priest, face to face or through a curtain, and you tell him your most grievous sins. You pray together, and he tells you how you can gain penance, through prayer, etc. I know it all sounds crazy, but after the last time I went, I felt amazing when I left. Like a weight had been lifted of off me. Whether it is legit or placebo effect,  I don't know, but for those that believe, I can see its comfort.

You wouldn't go if you did.

I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ. - Ghandi (though it is disputed that he actually said it. still applies..)

In my experience, most Catholics are nominal, and are themselves ignorant about the faith (Bible, Cathecism, History..). Probably because it is inherited and very repetitive in its day to day forms..

Oh, and yeah, my mom was terrified of one senile old nun in particular. And my grandma got slapped across the face for talking to a boy in class.

The "abusive nun" is a pretty outdated stereotype.  At least 2 decades, in my experience.

I know I'm a catch hell for this but, the nun in my story.  She was my grandma's sister...  So maybe the temper came from being bloodfart family tree related and not religion related.
