I believe etiquette would actually say that you should approach the gift givers and apologize that the checks were somehow misplaced and return them. The gift giver may actually be upset or hurt that you didn't even cash the checks.

had to stop by hyvee for some apple raising stuffed pork chops and sweet potatoes, then checked out the whole food aisle, looked around and there wasnt a stampeder within a mile.. today was a good day
