Southwell and JO
« on: February 01, 2012, 03:12:23 PM »

1)  Sprads is the clear cut number 1 reason why this team is struggling.   Its not close.   His offensive problems have been documented plenty on here, so i will just brielfy post his poor numbers=   7-25 from 2pt, 6-30 from 3pt, 7.0 pts/game since Mizzou win.   1 good game, and the rest of his games are not even OK games,   The other 8 conf games are clearly bad games for what we expect

But Shane and JO were playing good when our non conf was winding down and we are getting absolutely nothting from these 2 either

2)  Southwell's decline.   He was good vs Mizzou.   His other 8 conf games, he has pretty much been useless.   Here are the numbers in those 8 games =
*  3 rebounds in 94 minutes.    This is just unexcuseable for someone 6'6
*  Asst/TO totals - 13/9.   In his other 12 games - 38/16
*  Only 4 FGs made ( 26.7 FG%)

3)  JO back to clownshoes.  Combined with his suspension which basicly lasted almost 2 full games and his poor play that got him in the Frank doghouse...... JO has given nothing to this team the past 6 games.    We actually won the 2 games he basicly was suspended (1-3 in the other games).

Prior to his decline, JO's previous 8 games = 8.9pts, 4.8 reb, 1.8 blk, 56 FG% in 21 minutes/g.     Numbers we all could live with

Would be interesting to know how many of sprad's 7pt/gm are ft's.

Will has made 20 FTs in Big 12 games.

To be fair, last night was also Rod's worst offensive game in Big 12 play, plus he had no offensive boards and shot no FTs.

Frank wouldn't survive the tuck outrage if he ran off will. Would make for fantastic BBSing though.

Any "leader" talk is always pure BS. I mean seriously WGAF who the team "leader" is. My goodness.

Yeah, it is almost always means of motivation.  My point is that Frank isn't going to push a guy forward as a team leader then Frank his ass.  Won't happen.

Not a big 12 guard, not a leader, but one of the best we've got.  :barf:

A simple fix to many of these issues you ask?

Less right fit, more go to on the recruiting trail.

Sprads isn't going anywhere and its clear Frank is going to be patient with him.

If anything, Frank is trying to tighten the rotation at the 2 guard spots. He's going with a combo of Will, Angel, and Tay and in Big 12 play those 3 account for 89% of the available 80 minutes at those two spots. Then he's going to give a cup of coffee to Southy, Jones, or whoever. Frank is doing everything he can to get Angel more minutes, but right now Angel's foul trouble is keeping him off the floor. He's averaging 16 minutes per game in Big 12 play, but I'm sure Frank would prefer that he play at least 20 min per game.

And while he wasn't spectacular, Will had a better game in Ames. Offensive rating of 113 along with 5 assists and 1 turnover. Again, he's got to play much better, but Frank is going to continue to lean on those 3 for his 2 guard spots. At least 2 have to play well on a nightly basis. Lately we haven't gotten that as much as we need it, but if we are going to be a 10-8 team its going to come down to those 3 taking most of the guard minutes.

Frank doesn’t really have any other option but to be patient, since Angel wants to see how quickly he can foul himself out of games.  And as you point out the only other options are Southbad or Jones (who must’ve made a pass at Anya or something).

Having another guard on scholarship, like, I don’t know…Nick Russell…would be infinitely better than a guy like Omari.

Yes, I hope that Frank is learning some lessons about roster management and continuity. If you're going to have mostly 3 star players, you better keep them around and figure out how to develop them.

I'd even add to that and say that he should keep, regardless of not seeing eye to eye, as many guards as he can.  The basketball world is filled with hs or juco 3's, but not with 3rd  year guards.
