I'm sure it was a consession Currie had to make.  The main thing is we made it heavy on the front end, so at least this year and probably next we're pretty safe.  But I'm sure part of the negotiation with doing a staggered increase in salary was to do a staggered decrease in buy out.

Yeah, the fact that it becomes basically meaningless after one season is a little worrisome but if the right school comes calling the money isn't going to be what stops him from going.  Maybe a little powertardish here but after the press conference I completely fell into the "Frank Loves Us" trap that I swore I would never fall into.  We'll see I guess.

if it makes you feel any better, we'll likely do something pretty amazing next season for someone to offer enough to get him.

i know i watched it and i was verklempt.  just think how choked up he'll be when he can make twice what he's making to coach back home in Miami.  hopefully he's still bitter about how he got railroaded as a HS coach down there and doesn't want to go home.

Buyouts are total false sense of security, Beilien paid at least part of his own 2+ million buyout just to escape Appalachia!

Only the truly ego driven coaches (Coach K, Stoops, etc) really care about the money once it reaches this level - it is many more times about the support of the AD, etc.

As sys said, the buyout money would be nice for the next coach, but in the two highest profile buyout situations I can remember (Beilien and Rodriguez leaving WVU to UM), they both ended up in court anyways, reducing the actual financial benefit of the buyout.

I think it is not a coincidence that Frank go paid almost identical to Anderson at MU - I think that was part of his ego not wanting to be paid less than a guy he doesn't like (and maybe doesn't respect?)

I mean, what did you guys want? An inclining buyout that starts at $750K and grows to $2M in Year 3? He'd never sign that. A buyout in excess of $2M every year of the deal? Too expensive for us, and still wouldn't dissuade big names from calling for him.

There is absolutely nothing we can do to keep the big boys from calling on him if they want him, so this buyout is pretty irrelevant from that standpoint. Why I think it's good is that it's big enough for the next 2 years to keep the mid-to-high level players at bay (the 2nd tier, we'll say), while becoming increasingly affordable to us if he starts sucking.

I'll never understand the panic the last few weeks, nor do I understand any relief today in regards to Frank Martin's contract.  Nothing has changed in terms of the likely hood that he is staying or going after next year...or after this season for that matter.  Quite possibly the biggest non-issue talking point in board history.

Meh, I disagree. I do think it increases the likelihood of him staying the next 2 years at least. Makes it a certainty? Of course not. But increases our chances of continuing to be relevant in basketball quite substantially.

Under the circumstances, that is the risk Currie had to take.  I don't think Currie had any choice but to fully commit to Frank being the coach at KSU for the next 5 years, regardless if it goes south.  So really, the number on KSU's side meaningless; KSU will accept basketball of Tom Asbury quality before it will pay $4M to fire the coach.  Heck, I would have taken KSU's number as $1B in order to get $2M if Frank leaves.
