Is it possible to overdress for a job interview?
« on: January 19, 2012, 01:24:21 PM »
Kind of a stupid question, I know (I think there had even been a thread about this before, but I couldn't find it, so maybe it was ksufans ]), but please spare me any Savile Row nonsense.

I'm interviewing for a job that is elite in its own way, and more importantly could make me very happy, but it's a little bit of a departure from what I'm used to.

I would be working closely with the "Garst Seed demographic", if you will, and I don't want to come of as uppity or anything.

I am thinking I should probably go with a sport coat rather than a suit, and am even debating whether I should wear a tie.

Suggestions?

I doubt you could. Maybe if you're applying for a job shoveling crap, but even then I'd doubt it.

Wear a suit and tie. You are over thinking this.

I'd go dress shirt and tie, no coat, maybe a bolo tie?? Or wear a suit and cowboy boots, that way you have it all covered

I suppose I would say it is in the realm of wildlife management. I'd primarily work out of my home, with field visits. I think a fair amount of those visits could be to Topeka ... so maybe a suit is in order after all and I have been over thinking this.

Is the interview in an office or out in the wilderness?

As a topeakian I can tell you bolo ties are completely in right now, you can't go wrong with a nice tight bolo

Somewhere in between? (sorry to answer with a riddle)

Bolo tie it is. Now I just need to decide on turquoise or no.

I think you can get away with the sport coat described but I would still wear a suit to be safe.  You really can't go wrong with a suit unless you are interviewing for manual labor.

Is the interview in an office? If so, wear a suit and tie. Better to be over dressed than under dressed. People will understand that you dressed up for the interview because it (a) customary, and (b) important to you. The only exceptions I can think of are if you are interviewing for a manual labor job, like Steve Dave says, or if your interview is for some other reason outdoors where a suit and tie would not be functional.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, K-State fans could have beheaded the entire KU team at midcourt, and K-State fans would be celebrating it this morning.  They are the ISIS of Big 12 fanbases.

At the office I work at now everyone wears jeans and polos. Wearing a suit and tie to my interview felt weird, but I got the job so  :dunno:

If any peon who was interviewing for a job where they pay over $45k ever showed up in a sport coat and tie I'd make him drop his own rejection letter in the mail on the way out.

Wear a suit.  Have your interview at The Filling Station.

I showed up for an interview in collared shirt and slacks, for a job that pays way more than that. And got the job

According to the lead recruiter for Google, who was a former recruiter for Microsoft, dress 1 "level" above what the normal dress code is at that company.

This. Always do 1-2 above with the ceiling at a nice suit.

Wear a great suit then you can go hit a fancy bar afterwards and smooth out some chicks.
