I don't think the Total War series is all that similar to Civilization, other than being turned based. I would still recommend the games, though.

It's not turn based, but similar i guess.

I am going to try some new strategies in Civ5. I have been focused on huge expansion, and building loads of improvements. Now, I will go for gold and science...and city state alliances, with fewer owned cities.

I've never been able to succeed with the huge expansion strategy in Civ5. I rarely build more than four or five cities. In Civ5 I'd rather have a handful of supercities than a bunch of pud cities, plus the game penalizes you for building a large empire with increased social policy costs. Only way I've ever maintained sprawling empires in that game is by turning other civs into puppets.

City States are pretty valuable. I always be nice to them.

Ya, I am working on a strategy where I have about 6 cities on key resources and luxuries, and I make every single city state my ally. I am dominating on tech and culture.
