11:55

PRE-GAME
11:55

Live courtside at the Octagon of Boo. Student section probably half full, rest of the fans starting to file in.
11:56

Missouri is playing, essentially, for a top five ranking. With Duke's loss earlier this week, they're going to be fifth at worst with a win.
11:56

My feeling is this: If Missouri plays offensively the way it has most of the year, Kansas State can't beat them. I just don't think the Cats have the firepower to get to 75 or 80 points.
11:57

The key for Mizzou is keeping Ratliffe and Moore in the game for a decent number of minutes. KSU likes to ugly up the game and fouls can ramp up in a hurry. Those two and English need to be careful.
12:12

The key matchup in this one is Samuels against English. It's a mismatch both ways. Who gets the better? English has certainly been a far more consistent player so far this season.
12:15

As for why it's a mismatch, Samuels is two or three inches bigger than Kim and can take him inside, but probably can't stick with him on the perimeter.
12:15

Missouri's biggest edge, as it is in pretty much every game, should be the speed of Dixon, Pressey and Denmon. KSU can't match that.
12:16

It's real simple: If Missouri can speed K-State up and make this a game in the 70s or 80s, they win. If KSU can slow it down and keep it in the 50s or 60s the Cats may still get beat, but they'll have a far better chance.
12:19

Student section is now mostly full (though a lot of the people sitting there don't look like students). Rest of the arena still has quite a few gaps, but we're also still about 25 minutes from tipoff.
12:19

Tigers take the floor in the all blacks to a round of boos
12:21

If I'm counting right, Missouri has lost eight of its last ten Big 12 road openers
12:25

I wish the students at Mizzou Arena would make the cutouts of the giant heads of players and coaches. I enjoy those.
12:26

Mizzou's two wins in conference road openers have been 94-89 at Tech two years ago and 71-69 at Oklahoma in 2005-06 when Marshall Brown got fouled on a three in the final seconds.
12:34

Eight minutes to tip, there are still some empty seats. Quite a few actually. Don't think they're going to fill it up here.
12:34

I think Missouri wins today. I don't say it with a ton of confidence, but nobody's beaten them yet and until they do, it's kind of hard to pick against them. 76-71 Tigers is my prediction.
12:37

Same starting five for Mizzou. KSU will go with Martavious Irving, Jordan Henriquez, Rodney McGruder, Jamar Samuels and Will Spradling.
12:37

Usually Thomas Gipson starts, but Henriquez has been playing better of late and gets the nod today. It will be Ratliffe giving up four inches to Henriquez and English giving up a couple against Samuels.
12:38

Steve Walentik tells me this is the first time MU and K-State have met when both were ranked teams since 1982. Coincidentally, that was also the last time Missouri was 14-0.
12:39

Stands are filling in. Still 2-3 largely empty sections, but probably 85-90% full right now.
12:39

If the KSU cheerleaders don't move, I'm going to have a hard time seeing the game.
12:40

They moved. Perhaps one of them is reading IA or following me on Twitter.
12:40

K-State is wearing the gray uniforms, purple trim.
12:41

By the way, this will be the fourth start of the season for Henriquez. First game the freshman Gipson has not started.
12:44

K-State has a unique opportunity this week. There are four unbeaten teams left in college basketball. KSU hosts two of them in the next four days.
12:45

The Cats are also staring at a potentially really tough situation. With a loss at Kansas already, if they can't knock off Missouri or Baylor at home, they're going to be 0-3 and have virtually no chance to win the Big 12 even though 15 games remain.
12:45

One of Missouri's guards was just introduced to the crowd as Matt Pressley. His brother, however, is Phil Pressey.
12:47

I expect Kansas State to start well and jump out to a lead in the first half. I think the Tigers will be able to handle it and respond. Really interesting game today. Here we go.
12:47

FIRST HALF
12:47

Ratliffe and Henriquez (don't know when he lost the Roberts from his name) will jump center. I'd be shocked if the Tigers win this one.
12:47

The tip, I mean. Not the game.
12:48

I'm always impressed by the KSU student section. As loud and rowdy and into the game as any I see all year.
12:48

   Cats win the tip.
12:49

Pressey guards Spradling. Matt Pressey draws McGuder, who is K-State's best offensive player.
12:49

McGruder posts up, misses from five feet, but the rebound bounces off Matt Pressey and Ratliffe out of bounds.
12:49

Missouri is in a zone here.
12:49

Got to identify Spradling. He's the guy that can get hot from deep.
12:49

Travel on Henriquez and a K-State turnover.
12:50

Irbing guards Phil Pressey, who threads the needle to his brother, but Matt can't handle it and it's out of bounds to the Cats.
12:50

   Henriquez scores down low.
12:50

Phil throws it out of bounds. Thought Matt was going to cut and he didn't. Terrible start for the Pressey brothers.
12:51

Missouri switching defenses now goes man to man.
12:51

McGruder misses. Tigers run, but KSU gets back. Pressey to a wide open Matt for three. It goes.
12:51

Henriquez misses over Ratliffe. Missouri will let him shoot from 13 feet all day.
12:51

Great passing leads to a wide open three for English. He misses, but Phil rebounds.
12:52

Ratliffe posts Henriquez. And he travels. Ugly game so far. Most games Kansas State plays are.
12:52

Three Tiger turnovers in the early going.
12:52

Mismatch with Denmon on Samuels. KSU finds it and he's fouled by Ratliffe. Ricardo has to be careful now.
12:53

Free throws good as Moore replaces Ratliffe.
12:53

Pressey with a great feed to Denmon, but his shot is blocked. Spradling misses a three. Matt Pressey the rebound, fouled by Samuels. Silly foul there.
12:54

English cut off on the drive. Ten to shoot.
12:54

Phil Pressey pulls up from 18 and misses.
12:54

McGruder drives around Pressey and scores. 6-3 Cats.
12:55

Missouri not playing well, but KSU isn't good enough offensively to really stretch it out.
12:55

Matt Pressey misses a three. Missouri needs to look more for Denmon and English.
12:55

Spradling for three. Told you they'd jump out. Denmon drops the pass, out of bounds. TV timeout and Missouri needs it badly.
12:57

TV timeout: 9-3 Cats. Missouri 1-5 from the floor with four turnovers
12:58

Dixon in for Phil Pressey. Shane Southwell in for KSU.
12:58

Interesting that Dixon replaces Phil. He usually comes in for Matt. Thomas Gipson in for Henriquez. Rodriguez in as well. KSU already has played eight guys.
12:59

Rodriguez drives around Denmon, fouled by Moore. Not good on ball defense by Denmon there. Both the fouls on the big men have come when Denmon got beat.
12:59

Free throws split. Cats up 10-3. Missouri needs a good shot here.
1:00

Missouri can't get a look. Moore misses. Kimmie hammered on the rebound and they call the foul on English. It's the road in the Big 12. You're not going to get calls.
1:00

   McGruder back for Samuels.
1:00

McGruder off a curl and he scores. Tigers down nine. Biggest deficit of the season.
1:01

Missouri can't beat the KSU guards on the perimeter. Nice feed from Dixon to Moore. He can't finish, but he's fouled.
1:01

I think you have to bring Ratliffe back and trust him not to get in foul trouble.
1:01

   Moore misses the first.
1:01

   Second one is good.
1:02

Phil back in for Matt. Moore gets beat over the top. Layup for McGruder.
1:02

McGruder has six. Missouri needs Ratliffe.
1:02

Good feed from Moore to Denmon for three. Needed that in a bad way.
1:03

KSTate is really taking good care of the ball. Moore knocks it out of bounds away from Gipson. He sits, Ratliffe returns. So does Henriquez for KSU
1:03

   12 to shoot.
1:03

Southwell connects. KSU is getting great shots. Missouri isn't.
1:03

Denmon takes what I would not call a great shot. Guarded three. But he made it. Anything that goes in is a good shot.
1:04

Phil Pressey leaves Spradling all by himself for three. He's the one guy you can't leave alone.
1:04

Dixon drives and is fouled. Block on McGruder.
1:04

   TV timeout: 19-10 KSU
1:07

Irving replaces Spradling out of the timeout. Dixon splits free throws.
1:07

McGruder open for a layup. Missouri's offense hasn't been great. Its defense has been far worse. KSU on pace for about 90.
1:07

   Near five count on English.
1:07

Step back three for Denmon is short. He's forcing it.
1:08

I understand why, but he has to stop.
1:08

Ratliffe beaten back door. Denmon has to foul Henriquez.
1:08

Moore back for Ratliffe. Matt Pressey in for Denmon.
1:08

English and Dixon have to provide the offense now. ANYBODY has to provide the defense.
1:09

   Free throws are split.
1:09

At this poit, Haith is probably just trying to get to halftime in striking distance and get his team regrouped.
1:09

Dixon breaks the press easily, finds Moore who will go to the line. Tigers need to start hitting more than half their free throws.
1:09

   Moore misses the first.
1:10

   Tigers aren't doing anything right.
1:10

Second one good. Tigers 3-6 from the line. KSU 4-6.
1:10

   Henriquez misses, Moore clears.
1:10

Matt Pressey is swatted. Think Henriquez blocked that with his chest.
1:11

Spradling misses. Dixon goes all the way, fouled by Spradling. Mike Dixon is the only Tiger who looks willing to force the issue here.
1:12

Dixon hits both. Tigers have made five free throws, only three field goals.
1:12

Foul underneath on Matt Pressey. Good acting job by McGruder. Each team has five fouls. No player has more than one.
1:12

Miss by Rodriguez, putback by McGuder. He never left the floor.
1:13

Entry pass off Ratliffe's hands out of bounds. Ricardo hasn't done a thing so far.
1:13

Offensive foul on McGruder. Sixth on KSU, second on McGruder, who already has ten points.
1:13

He'll sit for Southwell. Great trade for Missouri. Denmon replaces Dixon.
1:14

Phil Pressey is fouled and now I know I'm in Manhattan. Boos are out in full force. Tigers in the bonus for the final nine minutes. Have to take advantage of it.
1:14

   Phil doesn't. Misses the first.
1:14

Second one is good. Tigers are 6-10 from the line.
1:15

Spradling drives and scores. Missouri's guards are getting outplayed on both ends.
1:15

Henriquez a huge block as Pressey tries to go one on everyone.
1:15

Now Matt Pressey goes one on three. He has it blocked as well.
1:15

   Henriquez misses.
1:16

Gipson back in for Henriquez. Maybe now the Tigers can actually get a shot to the rim. They've had more blocked than they've made.
1:17

Dixon with a guarded three. Missouri is playing selfish basketball.
1:17

English flops, doesn't get the call and Samuels lays it in for a 13 point Wildcat lead.
1:17

Terrible entry pass kicked out of bounds. Break for the Tigers there. Honestly, outside of Mike Dixon they don't have one guy that looks ready.
1:17

   TV timeout: 28-15 KSU
1:20

Tigers need to cut this lead in half by the break. Go in down six or seven and yu feel okay.
1:20

Denmon open for three. Short. Gets his own rebound.
1:20

Phil Pressey drives and throws a pass to no one.
1:20

   KSU ball.
1:21

Officially turnover number six. Seems like more.
1:21

Basket by Gipson and a foul on Moore. Wow.
1:21

   Moore to the bench.
1:21

   English in.
1:22

Free throw no good. Dixon rebounds and is fouled.
1:22

Free throws may be Missouri's best shot to stay anywhere close. Need to play defense too though.
1:22

   Dixon makes both.
1:22

He has five, all from the line.
1:22

Two offensive rebounds. Ratliffe just being out toughed on the glass. Gets this one.
1:23

Dixon to Ratliffe and they call a charge. Terrible terrible call. Again, it's the road.
1:23

Both big men have two. Moore returns. He has to go as long as he can. If Moore has three or four first half fouls, fine. If Ratliffe does, Missouri is done.
1:23

   Tigers go zone.
1:23

Spradling not in so that helps Mizzou in a zone.
1:24

Southwell scores over Moore who can't be too aggressive.
1:24

English just dribbles the ball off his leg. Turnover number seven.
1:25

English beat back door. Layup for Samuels. English shoves him. Just a complete and total meltdown right now for Missouri.
1:25

They have done literally nothing well.
1:25

   Free throw good.
1:25

I expected KSU to jump to a lead. I expected Missouri to respond. They have not.
1:26

Foul on Rodriguez guarding Pressey. Fouls are literally the only thing allowing Missouri to even score. That's nine on KSU.
1:26

   Front end is good.
1:26

Second one good. Tigers have eight points from the field, 11 from the line.
1:27

Spradling all alone. He makes it. Missouri apparently does not recognize he's the only legitimate jump shooter on KSU's team.
1:27

Dixon feeds Denmon for a layup. Nice play there.
1:27

   Matt Pressey for English.
1:27

Irving misses from in close. Missouri runs. Dixon and Spradling collide. It has to be SOMETHING. Either a block or a charge. It wasn't.
1:28

Dixon catches a pass now standing out of bounds. I did not see this coming. This is a veteran team playing like it's never been in a hostile environment. And honestly, it's not all that hostile.
1:28

   TV timeout: 38-21
1:29

Missouri has made four shots. Three of them have been by Denmon. One was a three from Matt Pressey.
1:30

Missouri is averaging 9.8 turnovers per game. They have nine in the first 16:24
1:30

At this point, what you're relying on is K-State to go into a major offensive drought at some point. They're capable of doing it, but they are getting such good looks at the basket, it would be tough right now.
1:31

Cats have the ball and a 17 point lead.
1:31

If Missouri can find a way to get to 12 or 10 at half, it's a victory.
1:31

   I'm not sure they can.
1:31

   Steal by Matt Pressey.
1:31

Denmon got away with a walk.
1:31

Phil drives and has it swatted out of bounds by Samuels. Five blocked, four made.
1:32

Dixon drives. Moore misses a wide open eight footer.
1:32

It was a good shot. But it has to be made.
1:32

Moore just leaves Gipson alone for a layup. Amazed we haven't seen any timeouts from Haith.
1:33

Great drive by Denmon. He scores. Marcus has ten. Everyone else has combined for 13.
1:33

Dixon fouls Spradling. Just grabbed him going around a screen. Good call.
1:34

Free throws are good. Back to 19.
1:34

Forget the late run this half. It's not happening. Just make sure KSU doesn't extend.
1:35

Phil Pressey passes up a wide open layup, kicks it out to Matt Pressey who airballs a three. I don't understand.
1:35

   Timeout K-State
1:36

KSU has a chance to go two for one here to close the half.
1:36

Irving just right around everyone and he lays it in over Moore.
1:36

Missouri will get the last shot to try to cut it under 20.
1:36

With 29 seconds left, Haith finally uses his first timeout to set up the final shot.
1:37

Assume you have to look for Denmon here. ALmost no one else has made a shot.
1:38

Instead it's Matt Pressey who airballs another three. Denmon rebounds and is fouled.
1:38

Denmon makes two. He has 12 of Missouri's 25.
1:38

   3.8 seconds left.
1:39

Denmon steals the inbounds. Pressey drives. And passes up another layup for a Dixon three. It misses.
1:39

   HALFTIME: 44-25 KSU
1:54

Stats you need to know: Missouri 5-21 from the field, K-State 17-29. Missouri 3 assists, 9 turnovers. Kansas State 5 blocks, Missouri 5 makes. That pretty much covers it.
1:54

   SECOND HALF
1:55

I'm interested to see how Missouri comes out. Honestly, I have a hard time believing the deficit ever gets under ten.
1:55

Denmon has it blocked, gets it back, hits Ratliffe who lays it in. That is his first shot attempt of the day.
1:55

   Ratliffe blocks McGruder.
1:56

Ratliffe T'd up. Hey, kid, down 17 isn't the best time to talk trash. He was also called for a foul n the play, giving him four now. Game over.
1:56

And before you complain, I'm sitting right on the baseline. He absolutely deserved the T.
1:56

   McGruder misses. Moore rebounds.
1:56

Moore is fouled on the other end by Henriquez.
1:57

   Denmon for three. No good.
1:57

Moore blocks Henriquez. Tigers at least a little more aggressive this half.
1:58

English drives on Samuels and draws the ful.
1:58

Off the inbounds, English misses a three. It was open.
1:58

Irving has it blocked by Kim.
1:58

Three blocks this half by Mizzou
1:58

We're not sure if Ratliffe has three or four fouls. I'm also not sure it much matters.
1:58

Spradling left wide open, misses a three. Perhaps KSU's shooting comes back to earth.
1:59

Rebound a tie up and it goes to KSU
1:59

Samuels just shoves Moore to the ground. That's the third on Samuels, third on the Cats in a minute 50. Missouri needs to get to the line a ton. Score with the clock stopped.
2:00

Matt Pressey drives and misses a layup. Phil with a steal and he's called for a foul. We're going to have a second half dominated by whistles. And Missouri doesn't have the depth to withstand that.
2:00

Dixon in for Matt. I'd go with this five as long as they can go.
2:00

   McGruder misses. Denmon rebounds.
2:00

Pressey airballs a four footer. McGruder misses, but Irving sticks it back. Down 20.
2:01

English drives and passes to no one.
2:01

   Spradling misses another open three.
2:01

Denmon fouled on the drive. I thought it should have been a charge.
2:02

Denmon makes both. He has 14.
2:02

Entry pass stolen by Moore who is playing well this half. Dixon coast to coast. He finishes and is fouled.
2:02

Free throw is good. Dixon and Denmon have 22 of Missuri's 32.
2:03

Five fouls this half already on the Cats.
2:03

   Missouri comes with a press.
2:03

KSU breaks it, but not easily.
2:03

   Pressey fouls Rodriguez.
2:04

Southwell drives and misses. Henriquez rebounds, scores and fouled by Moore. That's three on Steve. We may see the debut of the five guard lineup today.
2:04

Free throw good. 50-32. Ratliffe returns.
2:05

Dixon all the way, misses. He's not even looking to pass right now. Not sure I blame him though. Nobody is doing anything once they get it.
2:05

McGruder abuses English and scores. Back to 20.
2:05

English drives and draws a foul. That's six on KSU, three on Irving.
2:05

   TV timeout: 52-32
2:09

English at the line. Makes one. His first point of the day. Scoring error earlier. The tech was Ratliffe's third, not his fourth.
2:09

Tigers in a zone. Ratliffe takes a charge from McGruder, his third. Gutsy play by Ricardo to step in there and risk his fourth foul, but he had to.
2:10

Phil Pressey stripped on the way to the bucket. Out of bounds to Mizzou.
2:10

   Samuels returns for the Cats.
2:10

   Ten to shoot for Missouri.
2:11

English is fouled with one on the shot clock. That is eight fouls on the Cats in less than six minutes. Nobody can blame the refs for this.
2:11

Free throws are good. Tigers have made 17 free throws, only 7 shots.
2:11

Tie up in the backcourt, jump ball.
2:11

   Missouri ball.
2:12

Denmon drives and misses. Ratliffe collides with Gipson and that's number four. Moore in. He didn't like it, but it was the right call. To knock a 275 pound guy over, you pretty much have to have fouled him.
2:12

   Full court trap from Mizzou.
2:12

   KSU breaks it.
2:12

Missouri's only hope is to make KSU play fast and turn it over.
2:13

   Turnover KSU.
2:13

Denmon misses an open three. Dixon with a terrible foul. That's six on the Tigers and now KSU is in the bonus. There goes any advantage the Tigers had at the line.
2:13

Another foul on Mizzou. This one on Phil. He's got three.
2:14

Rodriguez at the line. Misses the font end and Nino Williams just goes over the top of English for the rebound.
2:20

Dixon hits a shot, English hits a jumper to make it a 13 point game. IF Missouri is going to make a run, it's going to happen now. Big if in my opinion.
2:20

Tigers commit a foul, KSU will go to the line after the break.
2:20

   TV Timeout: 52-39 Cats
2:22

Three Tigers have three fouls (Dixon, Moore, Phil) and Ratliffe has four.
2:22

It's McGruder at the lin. He and Spradling are the two guys you don't want shooting them.
2:22

McGruder makes both. He has 14, tied for the team high with Spradling.
2:23

Phil Pressey misses a wide open three. There aren't many days he'd be my choice to take that shot and this definitely isn't one.
2:24

Samuels misses over English. Moore rebounds.
2:24

Acting job by Irving draws the charge on Phil, his fourth. He will sit, Matt will come in. It was a bad call, but at the same time, it's not a smart play.
2:24

McGruder drives and scores. That run? Not gonna happen. Not today.
2:25

KSU down to 46% shooting, but Missouri still at 25.
2:25

Dixon throws the ball into the first row.
2:26

Henriquez just abuses Moore and scores. Give the Cats credit. They've been better at every position.
2:26

English drops the ball. Spradling to McGruder for the oop. Down 21. Biggest deficit of the day.
2:27

   Denmon for three.
2:28

Dunk by Henriquez. Missouri has simply stopped playing defense.
2:28

Match that with never having really started playing offense and you get a 20 pint beating.
2:28

Matt Pressey makes a three. Timeout by Haith, who is lighting into someone. At this point, the only chance to make it even close is to simply get red hot from deep.
2:29

And combine that with a bunch of stops.
2:29

   Henriquez misses from 15.
2:30

Denmon to Phil Pressey. Open three misses. That shot has to go down. Just has to.
2:30

KSU misses on the other end.
2:30

Denmon cut off on the drive, triple teamed, throws it behind his back and out of bounds.
2:33

Missouri leaves Irving all alone. He hesitates, lines it up and finally shots. It's good.
2:34

Dixon with a nice and one. He has a dozen. Fourth on Samuels, who has really been no factor today. Free throw is good.
2:35

English an open three off the screen. No good. This team has shot so well all year. They can't make a thing today.
2:35

Miss by the Cats. Denmon misses a three. Again, they're decent shots. Missouri just isn't make them. Any of them.
2:36

Miss by Irving. Offensive rebound by McGruder. KSU will run another 30 seconds off. Phil Pressey fouls out. Don't want to pile on, but that's probably the worst day I've seen Flip have at Missouri.
2:42

It's a 20-point deficit at the under four timeout. I'm not doing play by play. Getting a jump start on post-game stuff so I can hit the road home sooner.
2:43

Dunk by McGruder. Beats Matt Pressey.
2:44

It's not the fact Missouri is losing that should discourage fans. It's not even that they're losing by 23. It's that at no point have the Tigers come close to making it interesting and Dixon and Denmon are the only ones wh have shown all that much fight.
2:45

Steve Moore just fouled out on a dead ball double foul with Samuels. It's Samuels' fifth as well. Samuels is lying under the Missouri basket holding his head. I didn't see what happened.
2:45

Samuels is up and walking to the bench under his own power, which is good to see.
2:45

Andrew Jones in the game for Missouri.
2:46

KSU fans chanting "Big 12 basketball"
2:46

Miss by KSU. Jones falls asleep on the rebound, lets a Wildcat through and has to foul him.
2:47

Dixon misses a three, Matt Pressey taps it in. He's in double figures. He, Dixon and Denmon have combined for 44 of the Tigers' 56 points.
2:48

English launches a three. It goes. That ensures the Tigers won't lose by 20.
2:48

   FINAL: KSU 75, Missouri 59

I've bolded the part I found interesting for those viewing on mobile devices.

11:55

PRE-GAME

Anyone have a picture of Gabe DeArmond?  He may have been the myswriter at the very left end of the media row that kept doing these weird things with his face whenever he typed, like he was in severe pain.

Manbeck knows who it is and why he was hurting, but won't tell me.  I thought it might've been Mellinger but he says he was in the middle and won't answer as to who it was.

Tortuga, there's a pic/vid of Jason King in that thread.  Is that him?

It was not Scotchy, Trim.  It appears based on his twitter feed that he either passed out or left the building when the Cats got up more than 10.

Isn't "Scotchy" Mike?  I thought Gabe was his kid who would be in the age range of the guy with sensitive typing fingers.

:surprised: That's him.

Now imagine that smiling face being put the most tortuous experience ever, in Saturday's case, looking down at his laptop to bang out a note about a made basket.

The key matchup in this one is Samuels against English. It's a mismatch both ways. Who gets the better? English has certainly been a far more consistent player so far this season.

Samuels dominated
