Nancy Neg’s

F it.  Negs first.

In the first half of this basketball game, the Kansas State Wildcats had as many rebounds (10) as Thomas Robinson.

Sprads not Sprads.  He hit a huge 3 ball.  He (and just get the puke bucket ready) tied for a team high 5 boards :puke:.  He also did what he could not do.  He absolutely had to not turn the ball over.  KSU won the turnover battle, but not by nearly enough.  That has a lot to do with Will.  The turnover on the in-bounds to start the second half was inexcusable, especially given the situation.  It is ok to have one or two absurd turnovers a game if they are your total.  It is not ok to add in a couple more.  In addition, he was an enormous liability on both ends.  As terrible as KU’s guards played, Tyshawn absolutely abused Will on both ends.  Will could not dribble penetrate effectively, he could not pass effectively, he did not get off screens and knock down shots.  He missed a couple open looks from 3, but he did not get nearly as many easy shots as he is used to.  To make matters worse, he was completely abused by KU’s speed and athleticism on the other end.  It looked like freshman Sprads.  His half-matador/half-bull ride doesn’t work on a team with KU’s speed, spacing, athleticism and passing.  One time down the court it was a dump off to Robinson for a dunk the next  it is dribble penetration leading to a backcut for a layup, then it is a pass to the wing, to the post then a pass out of the post for a dribble and pop at the elbow.  The obligatory charge was negated by his two stupid attempts to draw one.  One led to that dagger Teahan 3 pointer.  Just play ball Will.  Even though he was the victim of the most absurd defensive foul, followed by a judicious look at the tape, followed by an even more outrageous misinterpretation of the rules.  Which brings us to...

Withey + Robinson = 54 minutes, 23 points, 23 rebounds, 7 blocks.  That’s getting owned hard.  Adding Young or Releford’s numbers in would just be mean.

Our man-to-man had some problems.  The man-to-man was not some sort of spell that was broken once we went to the 3-2.  We played exceptional defense for the first four minutes of the second half when we cut it to 3.  But Ku killed us with dribble penetration and Robinson facing up/getting iso looks.  Hard for us to double Robinson when he’s not on the block and is a really good passer.  If anything, our rebounding was so terrible that the zone didn’t really hurt it in my opinion, and I think the goal was to slow KU down and keep it close for a stretch run where we’d try to get a 4th on Robinson and go back to more high intensity man-to-man to finish the game, coupled with attempts to pound the paint and get to the line.  That obviously didn’t happen.  Haters gun hate.

Gip looked winded.  Well it was hard to tell where the sweat line was, but I saw the grandma hands on the hip move.  16 minutes and no points.  Played some decent defense keeping Robinson off the block, but he could not rebound and Robinson just scored right over him.  Is in no position to guard Withey.  Gip should fake an injury, work on his shot at the elbow and come back after the Baylor game and see what happens.

#teamangel could not provide a spark.  It was sad.  Peggy had really warmed up to Angelito, but Nancy just bossed in and took back her man.  Allen Fieldhouse was not kind.  He came in right in the middle of the patented ku run early and never even sniffed the court during the patented “cut it to 2 or 3 posessions” second half run.  10 minutes, an o-fer and 1 turnover has me thinking about Goats up, and aren’t even there yet!  Nancy Negs go first?  Shut up.

Everyone deserves a second chance......even diaz lovers.  I’ll pretend you don’t exist if you just stfu.  Unless Frank can convince Adrian that every other team we play features his brother as their leading scorer I think we may as well just wrap things up until a feel good romp against Tech.

Nothing “Meh” about Southworst.  Billy Goat beard?  TOO SOON!

JO had a South-meh game.  Just a complete whirlwind of emotion.  Nice defensive play, horrific turnover, nice post move, no made free throws, nice block, no a hack.  Hack a Jordan was a cruel end.

The ridiculous last 18 seconds of the first half that lead to a 2-5 point swing.  We hit a two there, then we cut the game to one point in the second half.  An off-the-ball call on Gip for a screen.  Unbelievable.

40% 3pt shooter Rodney McGruder you son of a bitch.  You play so gutless.  You don’t demand the ball down the stretch, like a sharp-shooter would, instead letting Jamar Samuels (undersized post-tweener) shoot it.  I don’t want to hear you bitch about getting off screens.  Go bitch at Gilson DeJesus.  I used to dream you’d be our very own Thomas Gardner.  I’m still carrying your torch, but I’m dragging it.

Peggy Po’s

Sign idea:  An example of a Flagrant 1 foul would be when a player swings an elbow and makes illegal, non-excessive contact with an opponent above the shoulders. The team whose player was struck would receive two free throws and possession of the ball. Previously, this type of foul was called an intentional foul. The committee wanted to move away from the word “intentional,” because a player’s intent was never the point to the rule.

Better sign idea:  maybe just a screen cap of Will getting elbowed with the caption: “An example of a Flagrant 1 foul”

Getting to the 1 and 1 early in the second half.

The fast break oop!  JO DOB!   McOrebs JYCOB! If that had happened in my childhood I would’ve done something magnificent.  I’m glad no one was recording me fist pump from the couch, then stub my toe on the coffee table then put my hands on my knees and fist pump then curse at the coffee table.

McOrebs is a JYC delight! 15 pts/5 boards (2 OR)/3 steals a little dart in the lane floater!  A little this a little that!  He is the best (role) player we have.

Tay tay back with a vengeance.  Big game.  I trusted him from the tip.  He is going to lock down the second guard spot with Angelito being the spark off the bench and Shane slashing.  Whenever the team seemed lifeless, there he was with a little jumper or a dribble drive.  Straw that stirs the drink I tell ya.  Plus he ate Tyshawn’s lunch and coasted for 2, which was nice to watch.  I’m struggling to explain why 1) he didn’t see the court more (26 min) 2) why he did not see the ball more.

Jamar is a man.  Did not whine about not getting calls on the block.  Did not sulk back down the court.  Did not stop hitting the offensive boards.  For all of his limitations and frustrations (at him as a fan and his own with himself) Jamar is playing like a leader.  Not THE team leader, but a leader.  A guy you can look to and say “well, that guy didn’t melt when he could’ve, he played ball.”  12 and 5 is not an amazing line, but he played well.  He hit two 3 pointers, he finished a 3 point play and then he was willing to be the guy to take a 3 to get us back in it.  Don’t blame Jamar that he is not a) Thomas Robinson nor b) able to effectively guard either Thomas Robinson or a 7 footer.  He will look really great against Mizzou, just wait.

Nino showed he can get physical....Omari jealously looks on.

Heeeyyy!  Sarcastic clap for Jones getting in the game everybody!

Everyone’s favorite, that’s right it is time for.......

(Audience)  GOATS UP!    GOATS DOWN!

GOATS UP!

Shane:  “Shaaaaaaaaaane!”

JO:  “WHEN YOU ARE SEVEN FEET TALL YOU REBOUND THE BALL!  GRAB THE DAMN REBOUND!  THEN AFTERWARDS YOU HOLD ON TO THE REBOUND!  THEN YOU CLEAR SPACE!  THEN YOU MAKE AN OUTLET!”

Gip:  “Gipson needs to hit the weight room!  He’s still recovering from Thanksgiving for God’s sakes!”

#teamangel:  “Annn-JULLLL!  QUIT CHUCKING 3’s!”

Nino:  “Now someone tell me what in the hell that kid Nemo was doing chucking airball 3’s?!  WHAT IN THE HELL?!”

Will:  “WILL!  WHAT ARE YOU DOING??!”

Jamar: “I told everyone this guy was going to be All-Big 12 and now I look like an ass clown.”

GOATS DOWN!

LHC LHC Bill Snyder:  “Well I’ll tell ya I’d like to see him coach for another 5.  Call me crazy.”

Tay:  “This guy knows how to play to win the game.”

You do? I agree with it 100%. I don't give a crap if it's not in McG's "nature" to be a give-me-the-damn-ball type of scorer...this teams needs one, and he needs to be it. So freaking do it, McG.

If you like McGruder, then you don't really like him, because you think he kind of sucks.

He was showing signs late, knocking down the mid-range floater and getting to the rim. Eff 3 pters for now, they'll come, just stay aggressive. He's got it, this team needs it.

you seem pretty worked up about losing a road game to ku.  they lose a game there, what, every 3 years?  every 4 years?

ku looked horrible though, and they have one good player.  so.... i feel like it is somewhat understandable for people to be disappointed.

Hard to find much positive other than Tay, Samuels and to an extent McGruder. Don't think Rodney scored the first 10 minutes when we really needed someone to step up.

i don't love southwell at all.  weird that you would think that.  i think i may have attacked you directly over some pro-southwell comments you made last year.

PP: Even in shameful defeat, Sprads inspired a hate thread featuring former high school classmates disavowing him as a "punk" and "little bitch" and prompting calls from phog purists to clean up this "organized streetball" that is befouling their holy of holies.
"How will I recruit to Manhattan? Well, distance. And the proud state of basketball. It start there, and then daily flights to Dallas, because I'm really good at going out. Like top five good. Ask my wife. She wants me to be happy."

One thing that will resolve the overall mediocre guard play . . . recruiting and signing another 7 Footer.

The only thing I’d take issue with is that Jamar in the PP should be changed to “2nd Half Jamar”.  We have lost this game (and every other game in AFH) w/in the first 7 minutes.  That’s where a “leader” does his work, not when the other team takes a break from destroying you and you manager to, under little pressure, knock down some shots.  but that's prolly a bit nitpicky.  I dunno.

And to answer sys’s question about being upset about losing in AFH….it’s not that we lost, I thought we would, it’s the idea that losing is the expectation.  Certainly, most teams don’t “expect” to win in AFH, but I’ve seen that game last night a hundred times out of KSU.  I'd like to think at some point, I would get to expect a better effort.   I’m disappointed because I can’t expect anything other than a performance like last night.

Exactly. Very jaded now. No matter what team we have or what team they have, that's the loser performance we give in the first 10-15 minutes at AFH.

good work KKTortuga.  loved the Sprads take.  he had a terrible game.  not sure about the subject line: "Sprads not Sprads".  you infer that's not a typical Spradling performance then characterize him as a guard who can't get to the paint and can't deny the paint to other guards who have decent speed and ball skills.

PP: obviously I loved Irving tonight.  he, JO and Jamar seemed like the only 2 that showed up to play to win.  once Angelito was permanently removed Irving should have taken over PG duties.  JO should have started 2nd half and should start Saturday.  Jamar's consistent effort should be the focus of concentration in the film room.

I enjoyed Nino's minutes last night.

I also enjoyed Rodney.

I also enjoyed when Diaz took a wide open 12'er and it was labeled a "wild shot" by the announcers.
