Racist family members?
« on: December 28, 2011, 12:22:32 AM »
Just laugh and  on the inside?  Or  :shakesfist: shame them and risk awkward holiday meals?

Always have this issue around the holidays.  Usually just  :blank: and change the subject because I mean they already know they're racist so, pointing it out seems fruitless.

Same issue with homophobia, those damn queers and all.

Ah the joy of the holidays.

It's the worst. :frown:

Thankfully I don't have this problem with the immediate family.

If they're old, let it go.  It's hilarious and cute.

If your grandpa tells a racist joke, is it ok for you to tell a racist joke?

my grandmother is extremely racist, but I don't let me kids around her.   My mom's racist in a "I think Barack Obama being president is a good thing for his people and I like him for it" type of way.  My oldest sister is the homophobe that always asks: "I don't care that they're gay, but why does it have to be on TV?  Especially on shows that are supposed to be FAMILY SHOWS.   It's just gross."   My dad is racist in the "rough ridin' welfare babies.   I'm tired of paying for black people to sit on their ass & smoke dope."

I laugh at them & tell them they're just closed minded & ignorant.  They usually tone it down or even agree with me that they're wrong, but they never change their mind.

My grandma is racist in a "I'm old and from Minnesota, so I don't really know anyone who isn't white so I still use outdated terms like Oriental and Colored" way.  She doesn't really say anything too terribly racist but I kinda get the feeling that she doesn't trust people of other races.

It's Sooner football/Jayhawk basketball for me, though Charlie Weiss might work too.

Don't have any racist family members (at least none that have said things publicly). Most of them are Nebraska fans though, and I had to listen to my 10 year old cousin tell me how Texas is a big bully and the refs didn't let Nebraska win the Dr Pepper a couple years ago. So that's just as bad.

Yes. My grandpa thinks it is politically correct to say "colored." Very endearing.

my grandma is racist in an old-person sort of way.. "there were 3 more murders on the news. they didn't say it was the blacks, but we all know it was." ...that sort of thing.

also, my uncle likes to goad her on with a certain type of nut that may have been called a certain sort of toe once upon a time. she must've named that toe 5-7 times at thanksgiving..
"I started calling him John during the game, cause he was rocking it like No. 7 -- like Elway," Harper said."

one time when I was like 10 I introduced a friend & his dad to my grandmother.   She asked: "What do you people like to be called?  Colored, Negro, black, what?"   He very appropriately responded, "Most people call me Jim."

That's just the tip of the iceberg people.   So embarrassing.

I assume everyone has the uncle who whenever sports comes up complains about the following:

Athlete tatoos
Long Hair
Touchdown Celebrations
Player Salaries
Loud music in the stadium/arena

Always with a racist overtone to any statement

My wife's cousin's husband (I know it's a reach, but he lives 100 yards from my wife's grandmother and is at every holiday) is one of those small town guys who makes racists jokes/comments but talks like he is black (he is an OU fan, if that helps paint a better picture of him).  This Christmas he threw out the gem "Robert Griffin is a good QB, but when will coaches learn you can't win an NC with a black QB".  She also has the Baptist uncle/grandmother who always have to have the "Obama may be the anti-christ, we need to watch him" talk.  We just laugh because she leaves the 5-mile radius of her farm house about 3 times a year.
