Interesting stats....
« on: March 03, 2010, 10:36:13 PM »
Take away Sherron Collins tonight and the rest of KU's team shot 58% fg and 7-11 from 3.  They shot the ball pretty well....and the zone absolutely killed us.  Tough to win those games anywhere against anyone.   I'm all for switching up for a few possessions but zone is not a strength for our team.   They played well, we played well for 28 minutes.  Very entertaining game until the 10 minute mark.

another interesting set of stats:

We came away with fewer fouls called on us than them, as well getting four more free throw attempts and got more boards :dunno:

I think Frank was forced into the zone way earlier than he would've liked.

Why can't people figure out why we played zone so long?  Really?

I would also like to add that one big upside to a hoops loss is _FAN taking off the gloves on our simpleton fanbase.  He's usually too nice of a guy.   :users:

Yeah.

I thought Frank milked as much out of the zone as he possibily could.  He switched between the 3-2 and the 2-3 (which was by far our worst zone look).  He also brought out a big to the top (usually Kelly) and ran a 1-3-1 or 1-2-2 look with token pressure to make KU run clock, then dropped the big to the 3-2 in the half court.

Keep in mind, the zone was really to do several things.

#1  We were in foul trouble and no way did he trust Colon or Judge iso-ed against Aldrich in man defense.

#2  It prevented Collins from driving and kicking/scoring.

#3  In the 2nd half especially, it slowed the game down a bit.  We were in a position b/c of foul trouble to try to get the game down to under 8 minutes and keep it close.  Unfortunately KU went on a run before we could get to that point.

Also, credit KU.  Self had solid halftime adjustments against the zone, working the ball on the swing, to the short corner or high post, then to the weakside for open shots.  And they finally decided Aldrich was a pretty good player and should touch the ball.  Absolutely amazing how few touched Aldrich got in the first half.

also zone wouldn't have looked so bad down the stretch had we scored more than 12 points in the last 12 minutes

Yeah, I think we had 2 field goals over that time.

Exactly.  29% in the 2nd half (while KU shot 62%) is the opposite of what we normally do.  As I said last night, KU did the wearing down.

Yes, kind of amazing how suddenly "ineffective" a defense is, when you look like a complete cluster_uck on the offensive end.

Yeah, between like the 11 min mark and the 6 min mark, it seemed like we didn't get a single stop. I think the early foul trouble f'd our rotation so much that guys were just gassed down the stretch. (which is the other reason we never left the zone) Once we were tired, they got their 2nd wind and then sherron started hitting shots. WTF can you do though.
