Game 6: @Hokie Peggy Po's / Nancy Neg's
« on: December 04, 2011, 10:49:13 PM »
Peggy Po's

Jamar pulled up his big boy pants.  A dominant performance.  Turned the game, brought energy, brought intensity, dominated the paint.  17 points, 14 boards.  More importantly?  0 turnovers.  Most importantly?  2 fouls.  It isn't going to be this good every game, but if he can string together some double doubles then this team goes to another level.  We have the bodies to own the paint against almost any team in the country on both ends of the court.  This is of course not a given.  Jamar has never shown consistency, but it is his team at this point.  Spradling is not going to bring the energy, McGruder is a freaking disaster right now and there are exactly zero other candidates to be team leaders.  "I'm just trying to put the team on my back. I'm trying to prove to everybody that I can be a leader."  Frank's Franking needs to pay off.  Jamar.  We need you.

Gipson is averaging 12 and 7.  Another solid game.  The three headed monster in the paint is an exciting mix of skinny, fat and just right.  At 22 minutes he looked gassed several times, but this is Peggy Po's!  HE HAS FOUR TURNOVERS ALL YEAR!  I am so in love with him, he is going to humiliate bigs all year with his finishing and his size.  I hope Underwood tells him to toughen up everyday.  He still needs to get in the paint and not settle for the baby hook-fade, especially to his left.

JO is a defensive monster and much better on offense than moron combos and tucks think.  9 points, 4 rebounds, 5 blocks.  He still needs to get more assertive on the boards and on offense.  While most of his turnovers are the adorable two-left feet type, some of the time it is because he lacks confidence.  He got a traveling call because he was afraid of turning the ball over once he started a dribble drive and tried to stop and pass.  Instead, he should've finished the drive and put a shot up on the rim.  His demeanor on the offensive end is completely different from defense.  He did dunk on bitches with a nice oop, and also dutifully patrolled the no-fly zone, but Jamar and Shane need to give him some lessons in confidence.  Would make a nice MTV True Life knock off.

Sprads is Sprads is Sprads is....  38 minutes.  9 points (2-4 from 3), 3 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals, 1 ridiculous behind the back diving junkyard save, 0 turnovers.  It was not a particularly good game for him.  He struggled a little against the physicality and dribble drive of Tech's guards.  But he did not melt down.  Needs to be said and his composure is an enormously important characteristic of this team.  It may well be the difference between bubble and bid.

Shane Southwell is Ike Turner and I am Tina.  I want to hate him, but he does just enough to keep me coming back.  I think I know how this story ends, but right now Shane has pimp slapped himself in to Peggy Po's.  Every single time down the floor I flinch as he nearly turns the ball over.  His had two straight possessions where he scored, which was entertaining.  A key 3 pointer, some choice finishing a little D, some completely inexplicable passing.  I am guessing that Figger wakes up in a cold sweat at night anticipating Frank's wrath during a film session when watching Shane.  Congrats on the new career high for points Shane.

Misc. Peggy's:  Slam Dunk Shots  Face eating defense  scrappiness   effort   12-2 run   2nd halves   free throw rate

Nancy Neg's

What happens when Jamar gets in foul trouble?

Rod.  We need to talk.  Sit down over there.  Another 0-fer from 3.  You look sick.  Did you go get the free AIDS test?  What the hell?  Maybe Martavious can cheer you up?  Have you gone over and played Just Dance 3 with him yet?  Do you   The saddest of all the Nancy Neg's.  I'm scared for you Rod.  McOrebs is the only thread still hanging.

#teamangel gtfo.  Seriously.  What a crap show.  His only redeeming qualities are his ability to play scrappy off ball defense, he drew a couple fouls and he had a couple nice passes to Shane Southwell who inexplicably hit a couple shots.  Everything else about his minutes were a near continuous disaster.  His 2 on 1 was Clent Stewart-esque.  But clearly this is the best fastbreak team evar.  On the year:  5-27 (.185)  and  3-16 (.188) from 3.  Yeah, keep chucking Angel.  Steves?  Stay on the Football board until January.

Tay, you know minutes are there just waiting for you, right?  You need to start acting right.

Nino, get ready to get thrown to the wolves  One of the big three are going to get Frank'd and it will be "batter up."

Misc nancy neg's:  Out rebounded 45-42  10 assists-12 turnovers  we don't know how to feed the post or creatively pass the ball in general

yeah it can get pretty scary.  not sure if this group will progress much this year.  Angel can get better once he adjusts to the speed demanded by this style of play.  hopefully he'll find his rhythm and give us some kind of threat on the perimeter.

defensively they look to be ahead of curve compared to the FrankCats of the past 4 years.

Where did you get your rebounding totals? ESPN box score has it K-State 40, VaTech 37.

Pretty much agree with all from Tortuga, expect more comfortable with Shane.
So did it take the second half of his going back home senior trip game to get Jamar to quit being a tease? Games like this will make him a rich man.
Odd what you said about JO, because last year when the"hey I can play on his level" first brightened his eyes, it was mostly from things he did on the offensive end.
Despite the inability to finished layups and hit FTs, I thought even the helter skelter first half was fun with all the floor burns and scrums. God, I'd love to watch one of our practices.

Then, sadly, there's McGruder. Something is wrong here. How soon before he loses his starting role to Shane (and maybe it needs to happen to snap him out of his funk).

2.
What about Shane Southwell makes you comfortable?  He is a terrifying roller coaster of emotion.

3.
JO was always a defensive presence and last year he averaged almost as many blocks as points.  His offensive game is enormously improved this year.  His shot from the elbow was huge.  He really could be a weapon if he gets his confidence together, learns how to feed the post and improves his hands even a little.  People want him to bang on the block, but that will never be his game.  See: that time when he caught the ball on the block in the air and landed two feet off the block.  He needs to pull up some Curtis Kelly tape and work on his bank shot.  He can shoot over nearly everyone and should be pulling his man out to create space for Gip/Jamar.  I really like the potential.  I also think he needs to be rebounding more, but that will always be a problem for him when it gets physical.

4.
I agree that something is seriously wrong with McGruder.  Not sure fewer minutes is really an answer because I don't think this is a motivation problem.  I think he needs to play through it.

Me too! He's so quick and can score. Hopefully he'll get better on defense.

I can't say who should get Frank'd, but if I had to guess who will get Frank'd, I'd say Watson. Maybe Nino should get Frank'd, but I don't want to believe this.

McGruder has been disappointing. Maybe he's just in a slump. Let's hope that's all it is.

Martavious' 300 arms are always a peggy pos.

Also, JO draining 15-footers and 3 (I think) defensive possessions (<--is that an actual term; it sounds weird) in the 2nd half where we forced a bad shot at the end of the shot clock, and that 5-point possession at the beginning of the game where we hit two field goals and rebounded two missed free throws.

Nancy neg: letting them get oboards after forcing bad shots at the end of the shot clock.

I think Rodney is being told to be the leader.  I don't think Rod fits the prototypical watch me lead player profile.  He seems much more comfy and much more productive in playing the scrappy I-make-crap-happen-when-someone-else-already-messed-up role.  He was/is very good at this role.  Unfortunately, tough to let him stay in this role without someone else stepping up to be the primary option.

Loved the D.  Loved.  Loved.

The only thing I loved more than the D last night was Jamar.  Fantastic.

Still #TeamAngel It's gonna work out wonderfully too.

What about Shane Southwell makes you comfortable?

Results: 20 minutes, 3-6 FG. 1-2 from 3, 4-6 from the line, 3 rbs, 1 assist, 1 block, no TOs. 11 points.
Serously who would you rather have at the line in the crunch, Shane or McGruder?

man tortuga really's found his niche with these wrap ups, great stuff.

for some reason the flow of our offense didn't annoy me last night.

Cheesy Mustache QB might make an appearance.

Defense so far looks much better after 5 games than any of Frank's other teams this early in the season.  Help defense has been pretty good, and they've minimized defensive fouls in the lane.
