Assuming KU fires Turner Gill
« on: November 27, 2011, 01:08:29 PM »
Thoughts on ADJC bringing in Gill as an assistant coach/HCIW?  A couple years under LHCBS could potentially polish this piece of coal  :opcat:  into a diamond.

He's going to have to sit out a little bit a la Chuck Long post-SDSU while BSAC squeezes some extra money out of ku on top of the $6mil for wrongful racist termination.

I would be mildly surprised to see KU fire Gill.  I can see them doing it, but the financial penalty in doing so, coupled with the stigma that would go along with how they treated Mangino, followed by how they treated Gill, would just be a huge hit in their ability to go out and hire 'the right guy'.

It's not like KU was ever a football power that's just a coach away from going back to the mountain top (i.e. Ohio State).    It's a job that requires a significant time investment for a coach to be successful, and if KU is going to fire a guy two years after he won an Orange Bowl, and then they go and fire the next guy two years in on the job, well, I can't see that as a place I'd like to try and launch my career.

Missouri did it the right way.  They got the guy they thought could turn around their program, and they knew where their program stood on a regional and national level.  Because of that, they gave him seven years before he had that real "breakout" year, and that lead to forty wins in four years.

If KU wants to have a program that has consistent success, they will let Gill coach one more year to minimize their financial impact and give him something that resembles a fair shot, and they'll spend their efforts behind the scenes trying to identify the 'right' coach for the job.  No matter what happens, they're starting over from ground zero, whether it's 2012 or 2013.  There's no rush for them to make any movement unless they really feel like having 20k people in the stands vs. the 25k they're (realistically) bringing in is going to make that big of a difference in 2012.

Honestly, if I'm KU, I hold out for 2012, and then in 2013, I'm looking at Dave Doren or Larry Fedora (if he's still on the board).  They need to invest in a SLTH (like Pinkel) and just give him seven years and see what happens.

Associate HC/Offensive Coordinator at the University of Ohio.  Also, he'd be the HCIW for Solich.

That would be a great job for him, long term.

What do you do when your racist fan base wants his head on a platter? Zulu might just be in survival mode.

What do you do when your racist fan base wants his head on a platter? Zulu might just be in survival mode.

Constantly firing people that just came into your organization is not really a sustainable practice.

Zulu will have to expend some capital to keep Gill one more year, but all you have to do is issue a release saying that you want to give a good man a fair chance to build a program, and behind the scenes, work with the donors and money men to build a war chest for the buyout/coaching search.  Tell everyone involved that the KU job in 2013, where KU has won three or four conference games in four years is no more difficult than trying to sell a coach on a program that's won two conference games in three years.  Also, they need more time to get their monetary house in order from Uncle Lew's massive spending spree.  The increased TV money will help with that in 2012.

KU is better positioned to go out and get a good coach in 2013 than they are in 2012.  And anyone that says they need to act now to get a good coach doesn't seem to realize that some new 'next, great coach' is only ten months away from being available.  I mean, after the Big East goes kablooey in the next year, Skip Holtz is going to be looking for a job.  So is that dude at Cincy.  So is Charlie Strong.  There will be some mid-major guy from the MAC (like Dave Doren) that leads his team to a second nine or ten win season that will be all the rage.

In my opinion, KU should have one clear cut favorite for Head Coach, and that's Dave Doren.  He was the big time recruiter that brought in nearly ALL of their talent under Mangino, and he was a very, very good DC under Bielma at Whisky.  He doesn't have the sex appeal yet because he's only been a HC for one year at NIU, but he's 9-3 and he has them in the MAC championship in his first year.  He'll probably end up doing the same thing next year, and at that time, he'll probably be ready for a gig in a BCS conference.

If I'm Zulu, I hold onto Gill for one year, build up my war chest, let Doren gain a little momentum, and then offer him a very fair deal with a fair compensation package that's incentive laden and liberal in extension language.

But, that's just me.  I doubt KU has that much foresight.

Plus KU would be competing with a lot of programs this year for a coach.

Surely this list will get longer, too. UCLA, Arizona St, and Wazzou are likely to can their guy too. All of those are at least equal to the KU job. Then who knows if A&M will open up.

I can understand why they would fire Gill this year, but it makes more sense not too.

Gill has proven to be an absolutely awful coach...one league win in 2 years?  jeezus I could do that.  That said, I'd prefer him to Old Ballz any day of the week...much better recruiter, young, at one time was considered "one to watch".  Anyone in the list above would do a better job than the old piece of crap we currently have strolling the sidelines.

As bad as Maryland was they're not going to fire Edsall a year after firing Ralph Friedgen.  Not only that but Maryland may be more broke than KU, they just announced that they're cutting 8 varsity sports.

Agree on Maryland for the short term, but the leash isn't long.  Arizona needs to also be eliminated from the list - totally spaced on them hiring Rich Rod.

Agree with everything you said, but I count on you to be right about stuff like this...
