Anyone good at math?
« on: March 03, 2010, 11:00:27 AM »
How do you graph a function on a graphing calculator?  Specifically this one:

http://my.hrw.com/math06_07/nsmedia/tools/Graph_Calculator/graphCalc.html

trying to graph: f(x) = 1/5(x + 4)^3

THIS IS AWFUL

Put a (*) between your 1/5 and (x+4)^3.   Then it will graph.

Good at math.  Never used a graphing calculator.

I don't know/care what a function is but this chapter is chocked full of questions about them.  Very angering.

orly? THIS IS A TEST: (for testing purposes only)

One question has a graph and it has points at -2.4 and 2.2 and a curvy line thing between them (above the X line) and says that shows y=f(x)

It wants the answer for y=f(-x)

Multiply your function by a negative (-) and regraph.

Wait did it give you a function?  Or just wants to know y=f(-x) for the two points?

It gives the function of y=f(x)

It wants to know the points for y=f(-x) and graph it

Should mirror itself at the point where it croses the x-axis.

Edited for clarification.

It doesn't cross the x-axis, it crosses the y-axis. (the one going up and down)

It doesn't cross the X-axis at all?  Zoom out on your graph to make sure.  Is it a U shape graph that doesn't cross the x-axis?

need to know if the function is even or odd....

Is it symmetric about the y-axis?  if so, its an even function and then the graph will be the same f(-x) = f(x)

If it is anti-symmetric (mirrored about the line y=x) then it is an odd function and f(-x) = - f(x)

If it is neither then you don't have enough info to say without the explicit function.

would love to, but I need to see the graph.

Are the all of the points in your graph postive?

IF so then I bet its an even function, and then the graph of f(-x) would look exactly like f(x)

The two points given to him are not the same, both above the X-axis.  One is positive, the other is negative.  -2.4 and 2.2 if I recall correctly?  This would not make it symmetrical about the Y-Axis if the X directions of the points is -2.4 and 2.2.

Definitely need to see a graph.

At nearly mid-semester of College Algebra I still have no idea how to use one.  Very intimidating.

just flip it about the y-axis

I was making life too complicated (since this is a function).

That's not fracking math, it's torture. Anyone not an engineer or rocket surgeon has no need for that kind of chit. Colleges would better prepare people by offering more comprehensive stats/research classes that involve real-world math.

AGREED. I don't have a use for anything beyond 6th grade math, really.

How do you do meaningful statistics without functions?
