Requests?
« on: November 13, 2011, 09:02:26 PM »
For this week's_FANframes/alysis I'd like to get ideas from the fine posters of goEMAW. If anyone has a request for a play, series, or tendencies from the epic 4 OT aTm thriller post them here. I will do my best to address as many as possible if there are any.

Everything I slept through.  Pretty much the end of 0-0 through 21-21.  Food coma.

The play where we get pass interference called on A&M. We ran that one a lot. Could we have success with that in the future, or was that a play that only worked because of how we matched up?

Scoring drives that took us from 21-31 to 31-31.  Seemed like we were just chucking it down field and was surprised how successful it was.

1.  The play in the first half where Klein scrambles and finds Tannehill down the right sideline near the goal line would be an interesting analysis

2.  IIRC the A&M 2 pt. play was the same play they got a touchdown on in the 1st OT, interesting to see our adjustment which extended the game to the 4th OT

3.  What was the cause of wide open running lanes for A&M?

4.  The drive with the Harper TD, analysis of the 2 big passing plays.

Any of those would be awesome, but I always enjoy the work, it helps my understanding of the game

In the Chat, we had quite a bit of conversation about the formation that we affectionately referred to as the "Zombie," which was the shotgun formation with the two running backs lined up either to the left or right....out of which Klein was unstoppable at running.

I humbly request the Zombie (but would love to know what they really call it).  It reminds me of the "Belldozer" that OU runs with Blake Bell, that has worked so well for them.  It looks simple, but man it's effective.

1. why did we continue to run hubert to the outside even though it seemed pretty obvious that he was never, ever, ever going to pick up any yards doing it.

2. if you take away hubert's 15 yd run (don't remember what it was/might have been a shovel pass or something), everyone on the team whose name was not collin klein apparently combined for 17 carries and 12 yards. just how monumentally horrible is that? why was that? what/how can they fix it?

I think I can help with this one and save Fan some time.  It was a broken play.  WR are taught to break off their patterns and head downfield when they see the QB in trouble and scrambling.  This is to force the DB's to make a choice: follow your receiver downfield and give up on tackling the QB, or go for the QB and leave your man open downfield. IIRC the corner kind of froze and stared down Klein leaving Tannahill open.  Klein makes a nice throw on the run and the homophobe catches it.

1a. Why did Hubert refuse to follow his blockers when running to the outside even though it seemed pretty obvious that he was never, ever, ever going to pick up any yards doing it?

This. Was one of the most exciting sequences of offense this year, I believe it was the drive after the 53 yard Harper td where we had Sheldon Smith downfield a couple times, first was a PI and then we had him again and it was slightly overthrown. Thanks, _fan

Great name, Pete and miscellaneous minions from chat! I would like to see what Hubert's and Wilson's responsibilities were and why the ATM defense couldn't stop it.

This.  Needed a name for that wacky formation.  Zombie it is.  Please make this an official name that catches on so I can put The Cranberries' hit song of the same name on our Sugar Bowl tailgating mix, tia.

Yes, would like to know about zombie  formation as well, though would still like to see how we got Harp for the TD, Sexton loose for 30, plus multiple PIs.

The Zombie looked like a variation off a Slot F Wing formation, except we put our receivers to the strong side and line the QB up a few yards deeper (maybe to facilitate the draw?). Also, does that formation count as "covering up" the TE and making him an ineligible receiver? I'm never sure on that rule.

You should do the quality punts Doerr was able to hit into the wind.

(This is because you are good and we don't need you providing any scouting for Mac n Co.)

The plays where we line up Brown in the gap on one side of the line, Tannehill audibles, and Gray runs for 20+ through the other side.  Should be a big selection there.

please log all of A&M's first down play to begin a new posession and then combo that with the defense we were in.  And then laugh at why Cosh blitzed to the left and wonder why Fuller (on their only play action on first down begin a posession) nearly beat our entire secondary even though he was the only receiver running a route against 2 deep coverage.

I will look at it. I know you didn't like it, but I thought the defensive plan was as good as we've seen since Missouri. We mixed up zone and man more, brought Zimmerman into the box a lot, brought some blitzes, got more pressure, etc. granted, Gray got way too many yards and aTm's trips bunch formation that you are talking about gave us fits. I do want to see the matchups they were creating that gave them such good running lanes to the weak side. I have a feeling some of it will simply be their front whipping the weak side of our defense much of the time.

FWIW, the first _FANframes is in the works, featuring the Sexton/Harper TD drive.

Without rewatching and just going off what I thought I saw during the game, I want to say that A&M was forcing us into nickel with their formation/personnel and then running, specifically on first down.  Our LB’s got caught a lot in traffic.   Arthur has not been Arthur since the injury.   It’s a shame too.  Watching Lamur is painful.

Agreed on our LB play. Having Walker back helped, but it's difficult with Lamur, and he is really banged up too from what I understand.
