Some Questions
« on: October 12, 2011, 02:03:43 PM »
First, why does the moon look so big sometimes and so small other times? It's always the same distance from the earth.

Second, why can't I catch a fly with my bare hands? I consider myself pretty quick and I sometimes sneak my hand up to within a few inches of the fly but they always get away. Why can't I catch one? They don't seem very fast when they are flying around.

Thanks.

i catch flies with my bare hands all the time, not too difficult if you're like me, with cat like quickness.

can't answer the moon question, doesn't seem very relevant.

Same here.  Catch them, shake them up, throw them down.  Confuses the crap out of them.

Also, optical illusion re: moon.  closer to horizon, the bigger it looks.  Perspective given objects on horizon.

1) It's an illusion of perception thanks to your wacky human brain. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moon_illusion

2) If they are landed, aim above in front of them. They pretty much always launch at a 45 deg angle. In the air it's just about speed and instincts. Can't really teach that.

I also have a question:

If you were the worlds best tennis player - and got everything that comes with it, women, money, fame, really cool remote control cars, etc but...BUT...you had to have tennis rackets for arms. Would you do that?  :dunno:
When one person, for whatever reason, has a chance to lead an exceptional life, he has no right to keep it to himself.

:surprised:

I know for sure that I'm quicker than all you guys. Maybe I'm so quick that I miss the fly because I aim where I think it will move but it doesn't have time to move there. Dunno.

Moon illusion seems made up. I don't think it's right.

this is complete bullshit.  saw a moon close to the horizon, seemed tiny.

1. Would the governing body that over sees tennis competitions allow the racket as arms thing or would I be DQ'ed from major tourneys?
2. Would I have fingers at the end of the rackets?
3. would it hurt everytime my armrackets were used to hit a ball?

You were looking at it with Fanning's lie about not banging that wifey in view on the horizon.  Perception, reference, etc.

I've seen a huge moon on the horizon over the open expanse of the ocean. Perspective given objects on the horizon doesn't seem like an acceptable answer.

it was close to something that helps you gauge distance.  Doesn't have to be trees/houses

What's the point of having all that stuff sans remote control cars?

Pretty sure the moon has an elliptical orbit, it is not always the same distance from the earth.  Also, certain atmospheric properties can sometimes cause the moon to look bigger.

Wikipedia confirms:
Quote from: Wikipediatrition
Elliptic shape

The orbit of the Moon is distinctly elliptical with an average eccentricity of 0.0549. The non-circular form of the lunar orbit causes variations in the Moon's angular speed and apparent size as it moves towards and away from an observer on Earth.

Sorry, thought you were arguing moon illusion, not moon distance. Your quote selection was fair.

Why are all you wannabe rocket surgeons overcomplicating things?  Of course the moon looks tiny, it's like hundreds of miles away.  Got any more brain busters you need me to look into?

Lol.  As if anyone could see something 100 miles away.
There are 10 types of people in this world.  Those who understand binary and those who don't.
