A massive, ongoing, unceasing effort by the ku establishment to make their students/alums/fans believe that ku is an elite academic and athletic institution.  When the subjects of this effort are not treated in the manner they believe they should be as elites, then they lash out, whine, etc.--all the annoying attributes you've witnessed in KC.
