I got a new bike, a Giant Escape, and I love it. It's such a huge upgrade from my old Trek. Riding is much more fun now.

Question for "real" cyclists: why do you get seats with no padding but then wear shorts with padding in the butt?

weight.

but the weight is in the shorts. You still have to move that weight.

i know the padded shorts are heavier than no padded but that difference is significantly less than padded versus non padded seats.

define significant?

carbon seat (115-200g) and padded shorts (200g) = 315-400g
padded seat (400-600g) and non-padded shorts (150g) = 550-750g

so anywhere from a 40-60% weight reduction for the saddle and shorts

also, congrats on the new bike, that's pretty exciting

One big thing with saddles is how they absorb and distribute your weight.  Nice saddles don't have a lot of padding because they absorb your weight through  the rails acting almost like a leaf spring suspension you'd see on some trucks. In theory you'd have the seat adjusted so it hits the bones in your pelvis correctly too.

not a fan of cold rides either, like at all.  have to get back in shape though.  been doing great the past couple of months and i can't let the cold stop me.  those kind of excuses are what got me out of shape to start with.

the 2 pieces of gear I picked up really kicked ass.  no they did not make me faster but they did make the ride a whole lot better from a comfort standpoint.

side note:  my buddy and I did not see a single other rider on the trails today so we are either badass or dumbass.  no I'm not asking for input on which one it is either.

AST- I love the Orbea.  I don't have any other experience on a carbon road frame though, so I'm not real qualified to judge.

I did have a warranty claim on the Orbea though.  (Small crack on the top backside of the head tube.  Bike shop guy said it was epoxy cracking, versus the actual carbon.)  Competitive Cyclist, where I bought the bike and Orbea both took great care of me.  They didn't have any of the white frames available in my size, so I am now riding this:

Been limited to mostly trainer rides for the last month.  Started using The Sufferfest videos.  I love them.  They definitely beat your ass.

The New Magna!

Welp guyz, the magna is no more. Purchased for $75 off craigslist this guy finally crapped out in the fall. Brakes became non existent and it sat over at my buddys house for a month until I trashed it.

NOW HELP BEN JI FIND A NEW BIKE!

Requirements

- Suitable for frequent 1-2 mile rides to bro's houses where I can crush beers and not have to worry about driving.
- MUST be a mountain bike able to "Hop Curbs"
-Maybe take it "Off Roading" once a year.

My current plan is to buy a new bike at target/walmart. Is there a better option? I'm really only looking to spend $100-$200.

yeah i've heard that about the head tube but fortunately have not had it happen.  i think you got lucky though because i dig the slate more than the white but they didn't have any when i made my purchase.  can't tell is that the sram apex?

Craigslist again. Spend the $200 and you'll have a much nicer bike than a new one at Walmart. Might try a local bike shop. We have one in Louisville that specializes in rehabs. You can get some great deals on classic mountain bikes that are in like new condition.

Bought a Giant hybrid off ebay for $25, seller was in a yellow gas station in Lawrence.  They were subsequently raided for being a fence  :sdeek:.  It's held up like a champ for 7 years now, but am now switching to my old Diamondback hybrid with 700cm wheels.

Am looking for a good light to mount on bike so I can ride home from work at 5pm--it will be dark on the trails until time changes in the spring.  Any recommendations?
