I got a new bike, a Giant Escape, and I love it. It's such a huge upgrade from my old Trek. Riding is much more fun now.

Question for "real" cyclists: why do you get seats with no padding but then wear shorts with padding in the butt?

but the weight is in the shorts. You still have to move that weight.

Geometry. It can be hard getting a seat that fits well. Easy to fix with chamois.

i know the padded shorts are heavier than no padded but that difference is significantly less than padded versus non padded seats.

you have no idea how serious that cyclists get about weight.  we're talking fractions of grams

carbon seat (115-200g) and padded shorts (200g) = 315-400g
padded seat (400-600g) and non-padded shorts (150g) = 550-750g

so anywhere from a 40-60% weight reduction for the saddle and shorts

also, congrats on the new bike, that's pretty exciting

Adamo. Nothing more needs to be said about saddles.

To the saddle question. Durability is also a factor. I can replace a pair of chamois much easier and cheaper than a super padded seat. I'd also say comfort is a huge plus in why I don't ride a super padded seat. I feel more comfortable on a WTB Devo over a long period of time than I do on some couch i put on top of my bike. Pedaling efficiency and movement is all around better.

does anyone else ride where there's lots of other commuting cyclists? I want to punch every casual cyclist in the face. Like, there's lots of bike lanes with lots of bikes, which is great. Except when you're at a red light and some dickwad just ignores the three bikes lined up and goes to the front of the line. Then GOES SLOWER than the other bikes. Last night, I passed someone who did this once traffic started moving, and they cut in line at the next light! eff YOU!

Also lots of them try to run stop signs in front of other cyclists, which sucks. I am honestly more worried about getting in an accident with another bike than a car.

I'm usually the only person riding in the bike lane. I probably would have poor etiquette because I never encounter anyone else.

Didn't figure this really qualified under SB's Vision Quest so I thought I would put it here.  Took my wife and kids to Colorado last week for vacation.  I got some rides in and also caught couple of stages of the USA Pro Challenge.

I rode up Lookout Mountain one morning last week.  The pros rode up it during the final stage and absolutely smoked my time.

My daughter got Jens Voigt's autograph before the start of the stage 3 in Gunnison.  This was Jensie's final professional race.

Beautiful Monarch Pass

Waiting at the finish near Monarch.

The party atmosphere at the mountain top finish was a great time.

It's always insane to see a pro's time next to yours. I've heard gunnison is definitely one of the better places to watch the challenge, definitely jealous. Looks like you had a great time.

Student cyclists around Manhattan are pretty awful.  I really hate the line cutting too. Although I worry most about students who have no concept of sharing the road, especially at the start of a semester.
