Private weather services do exist, and unsurprisingly, they are better than the NWS. When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005, the National Weather Service was twelve hours behind AccuWeather in predicting that New Orleans would be affected. Unlike the NWS, AccuWeather provides precise hour-by-hour storm predictions, one of the reasons private industry supports them.

Nice article. A well spent billion per year.

From your article:

Quote
AccuWeather Inc. senior meteorologist Michael Steinberg said emergency managers and the public could have been given an earlier warning of Katrina’s threat to New Orleans. He said the private company had issued forecasts nearly 12 hours earlier than the hurricane center warning that Katrina was aiming at the area.

He said that difference was significant because it would have given more daylight hours for evacuations.

Ahh, AccuWeather, the company that was founded by a guy who used NWS data and charged local municipalities for his "info". The company that tried to copyright NWS maps. And the company that still gets the bulk of its data from the NWS.

He obviously has a better way to interpret and distribute the information. More power to him.

You would seriously have to be a clinical Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) to think the NWS should go.  First off the private sector is sucking off the teat of the government to get their info.  Go look up what NOAA does and what they contribute to the US and the world before posting again.

Second accuweather may have been 12 hrs early.  But the NWS was predicting a path which was fairly accurate days before landfall for Katrina.  12 Hrs isn't going to matter days in advance when you have to overcome  a racist Mayor hell bent on ruining his own community and a dumb bitch Governor who thinks the eye of the storm sat image is a close up of her ass.
