Illinois and Taxes
« on: August 23, 2011, 11:54:10 PM »
Dont feel like going through the effor to post the graph or figure out how this compares nationwide but I found this interesting.

http://www.illinoispolicy.org/news/article.asp?ArticleSource=4362

Quote
Illinois lost more jobs during the month of July than any other state in the nation, according to the most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics report. After losing 7,200 jobs in June, Illinois lost an additional 24,900 non-farm payroll jobs in July. The report also said Illinois’s unemployment rate climbed to 9.5 percent. This marks the third consecutive month of increases in the unemployment rate.

Illinois started to create jobs as the national economy began to recover. But just when Illinois’s economy seemed to be turning around, lawmakers passed record tax increases in January of this year. Since then, Illinois’s employment numbers have done nothing but decline.

Data released today by the bureau confirms this downward trajectory. When it comes to putting people back to work, Illinois is going backwards. Since January, Illinois has dropped 89,000 people from its employment rolls.

That article did a great job of establishing causation. Good job.

Heard a radio thing about Chicago about two weeks ago re: their large budget gaps and how they are trying to address them.  The major one discussed was tax.  They mentioned how they have attracted so many large biz's in the past due to what was evidently very beneficial terms that were somehow individually negotiated with the city.  City trying to roll those back and increase all taxes across the board.  Iirc, they said that some of the larger co's were paying something like 3% and the city's new plan was to go to 9.something%.  Many of the larger biz's in chi were noted as making noise about relocation.  As of the story, nothing was finalized, so it should be interesting to see what Chi does.

I know you're borderline Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!), but the chart is meaningless in establishing causation.

All the graph does it tell you Illinois has lost jobs since January. Comparing it to national trends would not do anything to establish that the tax increases were responsible for job losses.

Rather than doing some research to prove you wrong, I am going to call you Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) for pointing out the obvious.

Prove what wrong? You haven't proven anything other than Illinois has lost jobs. It's certainly possible that some of those job losses are the result of increased taxes, but the graph doesn't prove that. To claim that it's wholly the reason Illinois is losing jobs is rough ridin' Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) however.

When I do it, it's for my own amusement.
