Just do what I did.  Get a $500.00 desktop and HDMI that bitch to your TV.  I use it for music and watching espn3 and other videos and whatnot.  Sounds like you have to plug in a lot of cords to get that thing to work on your TV.

I'm still using the HDMI cord.  There's only one extra cord I have to use now for audio.  I already bought the wireless keyboard/mouse so I can just set the laptop up by the tv for these rare situations and work everything and bbs from the couch.

Sony VGN-NW150J.  Came with Vista but put Windows 7 on a few months back, which did make some hardware things a little wacky.  Saul could explain better.

Install this:

I'll have to do this later tonight when I'm home, but this almost looks like it could be the best advice in this thread.

I watched National Lampoon's Family Vacation last night and noticed Clark had no problem hooking his Commodore 64 up to his 21" "System 3" Zenith to plan his trek to Wallyworld...  JFC   :flush:

Didn't work.  Kind of seemed like it isn't installing all the way.  I'm saving the downloaded file and running it, agreeing to its terms, and then after saying it's preparing to install, it just kind of goes away.  There wasn't a point where it said it had completed installing or anything to show closure.  Still no audio w/the HDMI.

That's what I'd done.  It goes through the stages and gets to the part where it says "Installing; this may take a few minutes".  Then the box goes away and nothing happens.

Is that anything like bringing my computer to MOAP2, having you do whatever needs to be done, and then testing it by plugging it into a tv at Houlihan's?

If you get the driver to work, you're probably going to have to go into the speaker settings and select the speakers eventually, as described above. I did this with my desktop, and it was a pain to figure out which speakers needed to be selected...and then it still stopped working after a Windows Update. Seems like maybe HDMI audio is not very well integrated in a lot of Windows 7 systems just yet...

lol, yeah.  If Saul gets it, great.  Otherwise, really not too much extra wiring to hook it up the same way I plugged a portable CD player into a stereo 20 years ago.

jdagg might be in the right area to fix this. I've done this with my girlfriends laptop (Sony). If you have the sound/speaker icon in your task tray (bottom right), right click on it and go to Playback Devices. You should have options for Speakers/Headphones, Digital Output Device (HDMI Out), and possibly others. If you don't have the HDMI Out option it's probably disabled. If it isn't listed, right click on one of the options or a white area and choose Show Disabled Devices. It will then show and you can right click on it to Enable it. If it doesn't show then it's probably a driver issue. If it is listed you might try right clicking on it and choose Set as Default Device. Try connecting to your TV then and see if you have sound.

It could be a lot of things, but the above is where I'd start. Or just have Saul look at it.

Not all computers (or OS's) support audio out through HDMI

If your computer supports it then make sure you check the correct audio out option in settings.

If none of this works, you can borrow my mac.  :gocho:

i have my 24" iMac hooked up to my 52" tv through HDMI via the Mini DisplayPort adaptor

since Mini DisplayPort exports video only, i also have the aforementioned penis-to-penis 3.5mm from my Mac's audio out port to my receiver's audio in port.

While it is kind of a pain in the ass to have 2 cords running out of the Mac, (HDMI to TV, and 3.5mm penis to Receiver) this does allow me to watch tv/play video games/whatever while i listen to music on my mac through the surround system.

Dr. TH, how do you get your Mac to export sound through HDMI? aka, which port on your Mac do you have your HDMI hooked up to?
