Pease sounds like he could be REALLY good.  I like the options both Bryce and Pease present to the offense.  I think of the '99 offense with a single back and 4 receivers which can transition to an empty backfield set and 5 receivers with 3 vertical attacking threats in Lockett, Bryce, and Pease and the threat to run from the QB (Beasley-Klein).

Backfield by Committee

As many as four running backs could see action for the Cats

Aug. 14, 2011

Editor's Note: "K-State Sports Extra" continues its nine-part look at the 2011 Wildcats with each assistant coach taking an in-depth look at his respective position.

By Mark Janssen

When talking about the running backs for the upcoming season, co-offensive coordinator/running backs coach Dana Dimel quickly listed the names of John Hubert, Angelo Pease and Bryce Brown.

But according to Dimel, the decision of who will start in the backfield on September 3 against Eastern Kentucky will likely come down to the wire.

"Of those three, I'm not sure who will play more at this point in time," said Dimel only days before the opening of fall camp.

Hubert is a 5-7, 185-pound sophomore out of Midway High School in Waco, Texas, where he broke the city rushing marks of former NFL Pro Bowler LaDainian Tomlinson. Hubert rushed for 2,853 yards and 41 touchdowns as a senior when he was ranked the No. 4 running back in Texas.

"John is a real strong slasher who has some toughness to him. He's not ready to be an every-down back, but he's not afraid to run hard with a powerful lower body," said Dimel, who calls Hubert a 4.5 guy. "He's not afraid to slash it up there and be hit."

Pease, a 5-11, 215-pound junior, was an all-purpose talent at Hutchinson Community College last year where he played quarterback, running back and wide receiver. The Cairo, Ga., native rushed for 834 yards and nine touchdowns, passed for 281 yards with six TDs and no interceptions, and caught 10 passes for 71 yards. He also averaged 19 yards per kickoff return.

"Angelo is really, really fast ... a 4.4 guy who is a talented kid," Dimel said. "I think he has a chance to be a big-time player for us. He's proven he can do a lot of things."

And then there's Brown, who may have been voted to the Preseason Big 12's first team, but the Wildcat coaching staff is saying ... not so fast.

Early in fall camp, the No. 1 high school recruit in the nation out of Wichita East High School in 2008 is only one of several talented running backs in the K-State camp.

"Everybody wants to crown Bryce as the guy, but he's not the guy," said Dimel. "Right now, we don't see him as a Daniel Thomas who will get the ball 10 or 12 times in the first quarter, and 25 to 30 times a game. Right now we see it as a position by committee."

Dimel compares Brown's skill set to former Wildcat Frank Murphy (1998-99), who could zoom through the 40-yard dash in the 4.3 range, which is a blink faster than Brown, but was never a consistent contributor on the field.

While Brown is faster, more fluid, and likely with a better feel for the position than Thomas, Dimel said, "He needs to show us he can do the job day in and day out. He's not the four- to five-yard and a cloud of dust runner like Daniel was.

"Daniel was so tough and so durable," said Dimel. "He played that first year with a shoulder separation, but never once thought about coming out. He wanted to be in there every play. He just never wanted to come out of the game, which is a little unusual."

There is another running back in the mix as well. He may be hard to find in the backfield, but in the mind of the coaching staff, he is very visible on the depth chart.

At 5-4, 173 pounds, sophomore Robert Rose could be another change of pace back in the mix.

"He's an undersized kid who can be hard to find," said Dimel.

Adding bulk to the backfield is 6-4, 255-pound junior Braden Wilson at fullback, who helped provide the blocks for K-State to rush for 199 yards per game last year, which ranked second in the league. K-State's 40 ground touchdowns were eight more than any other Big 12 team.

Adding depth at the fullback position behind Wilson are juniors Jay Hanley and Ben Kall.

"We think we can have a very good running game," said Dimel. "We're not as big up front as last year, but we have guys who are a little more athletic. I think we have the chance to be pretty exciting."

Academics is a stupid word.

Academic schools are synonymous for being rich, powerful and exclusive, three things Kansas State is not.

So when people throw the word "academics" around, that's really what they are referencing.

true.

nevertheless I'd like to have as many weapons offensively as the '99 team fielded.  the OL sucked that year (and it may suck this year) but that team still managed to be the #3 scoring offense nationally because of the offensive weapons we put on the field.  Great balance, too, in terms of rushing yards and passing yards per game although Beasley threw a ton of balls in the ground and/or stands.  Our completion percentage was only 45.3% but our pass efficiency offense was probably pretty good.

Seems like the '99 Oline was pretty freaking good.  McIntosh, Eby, Cummins, Robertson, Stephenson, Meier...  :dunno:

no.

McIntosh was talented kid but it was his first season on the OL (his last season overall at KSU).

Barnette was a freshman and split time with Stephenson at tackle.

Eby was a first year starting sophomore at LG and split time with Ian Moses

Robertson was a first year starting sophomore at RG.  Both he and Eby were undersized and struggled with bull rushers.

Meier was a first year starting TE as a junior.

We had 2 or 3 returning starters from the '98 offense.  That season was a mess offensively yet we still had the playmakers to hurt people often.  But it was not because of OL play.  That was a year long struggle.

Stephenson played 2 yrs in the NFL.  McIntosh was drafted in the third round.  Moses and Cummins both had starting experience and Robertson was big enough to start the firt 3 games at RT before moving over to RG.  Not sure what fantasy world you live in but that's not a terrible oline.  Yeah, it wasn't as good as the 98 line but still a far cry from being bad.

I actually live in the reality world.  You are quoting names and not distinguishing where they were in their careers.  McIntosh was drafted high because he was a BIG good athlete with a lot of upside.  As a first year starter he's really no better than Foketi this year who also has NFL ability and has a full year as a starter in the program and many years as an OT.  Stephenson did manage to stick on a practice squad in the NFL for two years, yes.  We have a 3rd year starter at RT returning.  Like I stated, both Eby and Robertson had next to zero experience heading into that season and Barnett (the primary starter at RT) had none.  I'll repeat...Eby and Robertson were very young players and undersized.  Both struggled to stay at 270 as sophomores.  I think Robertson struggled with weight his entire career.  You have the benefit of LOOKING back and seeing them as juniors and seniors (neither were ever dominant players)...going INTO the '99 season and throughout the '99 season they were both inconsistent and inexperienced players.

I'm pretty sure I'm living in the reality world of what that line was like at the moment.  It had issues all season long...had it been an OL at the level YOU describe the offense would have averaged well over 400 yards per game that some of the other later offenses did with better OL especially given our skill talent in '99.

They avg'd 374 yds/gm and 3.9 yds/carry as a TEAM.  And I actually had the opportunity to watch every single game that year in person.  Nice attempt at shrugging off having 2 NFL guys on the line though.  "Yeah, they were good enough for the NFL but they weren't good college players."  And Cummins was about as good of a center as we've had.

Our attempts to run the ball inside at UT (Sh Rogers & Casey Hampton) painfully comic; OB is such a wizard (offense only)

there is nothing special about averaging 374 yards per game offensively and 3.9 yards per carry is less than pedestrian when you have a running QB who wasn't sacked much and opposing secondaries had to respect the vertical threats.  Don't try to make out Stephenson to be Jake Long.  He was a 6'2 285lb tackle with good feet but he was also demoted in '99 by a redshirt freshman who certainly didn't have more talent than Aufner and Aufner isn't that talented.  Yes, I shrug off McIntosh, not for his talent, rather his zero years of combined experience as an OL until that season.  He got into the league primarily based on talent.  The interior OL was a mess vs. any DL that was decent.

I attended every game that season...taped 'em all as well and have watched them plenty of times over the years.  I'm very familiar with that team in terms of it's capabilities but I can see you're fixated on how the two starting guards did as seniors (just remembering names) and that McIntosh played in the league and Stephenson had a few cups of coffee on the practice squad.  That OL was very inconsistent that year.  The one constant and consistent player was Cummins at center.

Barnett was a redshirt sophomore in 99.

"1999 (Sophomore) - Honorable mention All-Big 12 by coaches... Started 10 games in 1999, including nine at right tackle and one at left tackle... Helped K-State to 31 rushing touchdowns, second-most in school history at the time... The K-State offense ranked third in the nation in scoring (39.4 ppg) and 24th in rushing offense (184.7 avg.)"

Yup, our oline was just terrible that year.

So you're saying this years' offense could be as good as the '99 offense if they play their cards right?

jtksu,

you used 3.9 yards per carry and 374 yards per game as your reason for why KSU had a good OL.  You don't follow college football statistics much.

seriously, 3.9 yards per carry.  I think Prince had a few teams that did that well and his offenses couldn't run a lick.

374 was good for 5th in the conference, even with Snyder sitting the ball during blowouts.  And I see you just ignored Barnett's season.  Kinda dumb how you just ignore the facts and change the subject.  Several future NFLers, a record breaking rushing attack, a high scoring offense, and you still stick with your view that the oline was terrible?  You are crazy Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!).  Maybe you could factor some calf dimensions or track capability into your argument?  Also, weren't you the Sniff, Sniff, I smell Outland dumbass?  If only the 99 line could have had your boys Handy or Boss.

Who gives a flying eff that was 12 years ago and you're arguing about whether an offensive line was terrible or not.
