Can we at least agree that privatizing the post office is a threat to civil liberties?

If you don't understand why we have a Post Office, why it is underfunded and overstretched you don't understand how the constitution works.

Is there something about the postal workers union in the constitution?

*Not sure you know how their retirement system works and thinks you only read foxnews talking points*

The post office is one of those businesses that doesn't need a union. Unions we're created to prevent slave shops and to improve working conditions. The post office seems like pretty easy job, so they should just do away with the unions as they have in Wisconsin.

Because if there is one thing we have learned from Republican association with big business, all out assault on our environment, and attacks on working conditions it that they have no interest in letting America return to the 19th century.

Well yeah, but collective bargaining rights aren't mentioned anywhere in the constitution.

Like I said, the post office is an easy job. It's not something that needs a union to protect them. I guess they could complain about getting too much exercise going house to house, or they may get bored driving around.

regardless of where you come down on the post office being managed poorly or not, calling a postal job easy might be one of the most Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) things ever posted in the pit.

Or the government could just give back the money they stole from the USPS and we could keep our current system.

It seems like there should be a way to improve government and help it run more efficiently, as opposed to just getting rid of it all together.

MSNBC to the rescue!!!  How does this lying, slandering, incoherent band of children, who apparently are too old to be on MTV anymore, get away with all the insanely stupid crap they say, while foxnews gets nitpicked on a nightly basis?

Per usual with government public defender MSNBC, the author picks and chooses his facts to twist the truth into the lie that the USPS would break even, or even operate at a surplus, if not for those gosh darn accounting rules.  FACT of the matter is that even if it didn't have to pay for its archaic pension plan (thanks to its wonderful union) it would still be losing money hand over fist.

"It's just too complicated to explain, it's crazy"  Do your rough ridin' job idiot.  The only thing this article is missing to be stamped grade A msnbc garbage is their typical blanket statement "it's the republicans fault".

If you can't find it in this thread, try google.  Its fed govt. so the info should be publicly available.

If you want me to do it, I charge $225 an hour and will need a signed engagement letter.

Your right, the union doesn't make up the accounting rules, like no one said.

The Union does however insist on a defined contribution pension plan.  The same type of archaic pension plans that bankrupt the auto and airline industries.  Switch to a defined contribution plan, like the rest of the non-unionized world, and you don't have to "pre-fund for 75 years" (which is an enormous misrepresentation of truth not worth explaining on a board where half the posters can barely make sense of a 10 word post, e.g. ednksu and mir).

the fact you that you think pensions and healthcare plans are archaic just shows how out of touch with reality you are.  Why don't you look up the statistics for how much the private sector pre-funds their various plans.  hint its not 100%, its not 50%.  Look it up.  The Union wants to save the post office, the political appointees don't.  This is yet another example of the far right wing holding American institutions hostage in order to relive the great depression and prove that they only needed a few more years and the New Deal wasn't needed.
