I think this is a partial answer.  Around here club sports are life apparently.  I played every sport growing up, but here most kids pick just one and concentrate on that from K-12.  If you want to get into the serious soccer club in town, you're expected to play year round with indoor during the winters.  My friend is a coach for an 11 year old girls team and they travel out of state for tournaments just about every other weekend.  He hates the recruiting aspect of it too between the different club teams...recruiting for 11 year old girls soccer.

I see kids playing outside every day in the suburbs, not so much at 12th and Main.

I just drove by a stickball game in Waldo.  Or maybe kids were hitting some lady with broomsticks.  It was dark.

Yes. They do. My girlfriends kids have totally ruined her backyard as its kool-aid corner and the site of baseball, football, kick ball, and soccer games.

This is good imo, as I think (just my opinion) that unorganized sports are good for the development of kids.

I see more pick-up bball than baseball, football and soccer combined.  It just takes less bodies.

You probably just haven't seen many outside lately since it's been a muggy oven back there.

Yeah, it would be tough to get a good baseball game going inside Latte Land or Ingredient.

We would ride bikes to the ball field to play home run derby.  Reruns of the original home run derby played on espn all the time which inspired us.  What a great show.  When we couldn't get enough kids  to go the fields, we played "Eric Davis" which involved your friend throwing a ball like a home run and you had to leap and catch it.  We also played "Ozzie Smith".  Same game but diving stops.  Looking back we were pretty nerdy but it was fun as helll.  My parents outlawed video games in our house and I'm glad they did.

Had a friend that had a perfect setup for home run derby. Also had a side yard we'd soak and play mud football. The whole game was a goal line scrimmage in the mud.

Isn't it harder to get a group of kids together with all the two-worker households these days? My kids are both in daycare all day.  I'm sure they do structured play, they swim, etc.  But there aren't as many SAHMs to allow for roving gangs of sporties.

No.  We have convinced ourselves that there is a boogeyman around every corner who is going to kidnap our kids.

Its just the way it is nowadays. My retirement has taken a hit from all the travel over the years, but I've really enjoyed watching it all. Plus, it has kept him busy, he's seen lots of places from coast to coast for tournaments he may never have been able to visit. As soon as high school ball is over, travel to: Raleigh, NC; Orlando; Chicago; Rockford (yippee!); Cincinnati and Madison for showcases. Kids don't have time to just relax and goof around at the neighborhood playing field like we did growing up. Different times.

Mommy and daddy don't let them out of the cul-de-sac at 177th and Quivira.

They would if the city didn't rip out the basketball goal they had in their street.

You can't go donate the 100 bucks to buy those kids a goal they can use somewhere in the neighborhood?   Oh yeah, I forgot, you are one of those who thinks the government should provide everything.

Yes.  The kids next door to me play every sport imaginible.

News flash re: video games- If you're younger than mid 40's you too had home video games.  I had an Atari and then graduated to the NES around '85.  Played tons fo video games and sports.
