Anyone ever fished any of the strip pits down by Pittsburg KS?

Going to a wedding in Independence KS at the end of April and plan on stopping by the stip pits wildlife area on the way home looking for some bass.

Used to live down there.  Fished a few pits SW of town.  Can be decent.  I always drowned some liver and sat on the banks.  Fishing for bass can be finicky, but I've heard some good stories.
